A good, if sporadic,day:
-2 Reds 41"s & 42"s
-something destroyed a 50 pound rig
-yours truly booted a nice Red by handing off
my rod to a newbie before the fish was firmly hooked-My Bad!
-cut large mullet and blue crabs on Carolina rigs.

Nice fish, but please show a little more respect to the fish when landing them. Such as not laying them on the sand or holding such a large fish by its gills.
I’ve personally done to multiple large species, but I didn’t know and ignorance is bliss. I came across a great article a few years ago and have been educating since. My degree is in environmental science, fish and wildlife management and I didn’t even know this!
Good read-
FD-
Thank you for your kind sentiments towards Redfish and your patronizing comments on my methods of release.
If there is some magical way that all of us who catch and release Reds can be absolutely sure they will survive; please enlighten
us poor benighted souls.
Until such a solution appears, I will continue to catch and release Reds in the various ways that I have been using for the last 25 years.
None of the hundreds I have caught and released over that time have gone “belly up”.
It’s very encouraging to know that all you “experts” know what happens to Reds after release.
Most of us cannot see below the surface-can you?
The end game of your argument dictates that no fishing at all be allowed for fear of harming fish.
I do not kill and eat fish; it seems you have no compunction at all in doing so.

I am not even gonna argue. Clearly the article is wrong and you are right. Let me know when done with your book on fishing.
Just respect the fish, they don’t belly up by the way, they just take damage that can prevent them from surviving down the road, if actually read article or did some research you’d notice that, but again you know everything.
jeez, didnt fishingduo just move here from jersey a couple years ago???
to quote nigel powers “Do you know who I am? Have you any idea how many anonymous henchmen I’ve killed over the years? And look at you, you haven’t even got a name tag. (laughing) You got no chance. Why don’t you just fall down?”
catching big spot tails in the surf may be one of the least stressful ways for a big breeder to be caught, considering the higher O2 content, and general lack of structure for them to beat themselves up on during the fight. add to that proper sized tackle as shown in pictures and you have a fish that is highly likely to continue a happy life.
maybe if it was a big blue fish or striper you would have a vote…
Such as not laying them on the sand or holding such a large fish by its gills.
How are you supposed to not put a big fish on the sand? Of all the big fish I have landed, I have never been able to keep them off the sand. Does it actually harm them?

-I do not participate in Red Fish Tournaments-never have never will. Your link applies to inshore fishing from a boat.
Wonder how many fish die in live wells and are chucked overboard?
-From reading some of your posts here, I must assume you are an off-shore fisherman first and foremost.
-There’s a truly brutal “sport”. Used to do it myself many years ago; but gave it up. Too much blood, fish killing,
releasing of exhausted fish as the crew laughs while a shark eats the tired fish etc.
-as SW points out; the fish we release have a fine chance of survival.
It’s “Sport Fishing” at it’s best.

I’m not from jersey, I grew up fishing carolina coast since I was a teenager.
Keep fish in water. It’s not hard. Even people handling 7’+ sharks are able why can’t you with an oversized carp?
I fish off shore maybe 15x a year? Inshore 1-2x a week, and pretty sure I know how handle a fish. Especially considering I file down barbs on 90% hooks to prevent extra damage as I catch and release only inshore. Off shore i keep what can as I understand it is a different ball game
How bout instead attacking a person we look into the facts? You are targetting an over slot fish that I don’t understand desire for. They don’t fight, nothing but a heavy carp, and able be caught so easily there is no real sport or effort needed.
Also it’s a tourney fish article because guess what? Those are the size reds worth targetting. Call me when you dial in flounder above 24" or trout above 20" consistently. Because that’s a sport not throwing out cut bait and waiting for a carp to eat it. I’m willing to teach if wanna learn real fishing not soaking bait.
Yes sand does harm them. That’s why you make sure your hands are wet of pick them out of water. Like most fish they have a slime covering their body(similar to not dropping bass on a shoreline) and putting the. On sand or dry surface always that coating to be harmed and removed. You can use google too, it’s not hard for even you old folks.
Nice, red fish are really hardy even the big ones. I caught a red the other day 4 times in a row and 2 of the times I was sure it was going to die gut/gill hooked and bellied up, I revived and caught again 10 minutes later, but I still try to handle them or any fish with care.
I might be interested in learning how to de-hook in the water.
I do not think many would agree with your description of large Reds as “carp”.
They are like any other large fish; some fight hard-others do not.
They are not all that easy to catch-except,of course, for an expert like yourself.
The sand is wet-not dry-we wet our hands-kind of fishing 1-2?
Ah, I see the age card is being played now-getting desperate?

Not desperate. I have more than enough knowledge fishing tournaments from bass to billfish. Pretty sure I don’t need use age. Just pointing out info is out there, ignorance can only be your excuse for so long.
I don’t care if you are 30 or 80. Still have no right to be rude, sarcastic, and ignorant when someone with clearly more knowledge in subject presents factual researches. If say grow up but you should’ve done that by now
You are clueless. I’m glad I’ll be paying for your social security someday while serving your country. Sure gives me fulfillment with life. Enjoy your carp fishing.
