Beaufort 45

was out at the Beaufort 45 Saturday didn’t do much besides BSB, hooked up on some big sharks while FL pin fish. Anchor got stuck but there were some divers out there and they were kind enough to free it up for me.

Good on them for retrieving your anchor. You got lucky. May want to get a reef anchor.

Were the divers sticking anything?

I thought about a reef anchor but I don’t like carrying two anchors. I’m going to look into modifying mine with some sort of break away system. The divers didn’t spear anything one of them was brand new to diving but they said there were a good bit of conbia and spades

Cobia. Sorry auto correct on ipad

Oh NO…please remove the cobia from your post lol:sunglasses:.

Thanks,

Do you launch your boat in Beaufort to go to the reefs?

Yes Sir, usually at The Sands in Pt Royal.

I was just talking about that landing yesterday. A guy who went with me 5+ years ago just returned from Fripp, he reminisced about how sketchy it was running out of Fripp Inlet. I told him that I go out of Port Royal now.
We’ll go out of Parris Island Landing, a little up river from that landing too. The water is usually super calm up there and bait can often be found at the 21 bridge between Port Royal and PI, so the extra mile by boat is worth it.

what bridge is the “21” is that the first bridge on the right leaving parris island landing?

No, Just as a reference, if you make a right turn out of Walmart, you will be crossing it in a few minutes headed toward Okatie/Hilton Head. Has fishing pier next to it.

Thinking about going out there for my first time. If I go, I will travel with another boat or two(other family members are interested.

Questions:

Is my Sea Pro Bay 21’ big enough for a trip out there?

When is the best time to go for calm sea…early in the morning?

thanks!

21’ Sea Pro is fine for there…on the right day! Also, early can be better in the summer due to the afternoon thunderstorms.

Heard it will be blowing out of the northeast so tomorrow may not be good for ya…check NOAA, Sailflow ect for wind/wave info.

Be careful and make sure you have all the needed (hopefully not) safety gear.

The first few miles going out of Pt Royal Sound can be sloppy…bigtime!

Make sure to have VHF radio if your boat doesn’t have one installed you can get the handheld ones pretty cheap off amazon.
