Beaufort Advice

Friend of mine and myself are coming down to Beaufort next Saturday. I have a 18ft bay boat. Any advice on where we should launch from? Never fished Beaufort before so any help at all would be appreciated. Open to pretty much any kind of fishing but would prefer to stay away from sharks. That is for everyone’s help.

Where are you staying?

We are driving down early morning. We live in Charleston.

Staying inshore probably?

Cobia are probably in the area, which are generally on the Port Royal side.

We find bait here

People used to crowd that bridge up, but we’d have luck on some humps further out. About right here.

I’ve had some redfish luck up in these creeks. Mullet can be found in the mouth when they are running. Been able to site cast to redfish on the flats at the entrances/exits of these creeks. Also jumped a tarpon out in sound, just out of these creeks. Seems to be a healthy spot to me, but I never feel like I’ve mastered inshore.

Good weather, I’ve taken a fiberglass 180 bay boat to the Ross, which is about 90’ deep. Good Saturday weather, there will be about 40 other boats there though. Cobia were aplenty last time I tried it this time of year, was a few years ago though.

Good luck.

Days Inn Port Royal used to be a cheap place to stay, but you had to call and tell them you want the old rate. I haven’t stayed there in years, but it was $50-ish and then raised it to $80-ish at one point. Always sold me a $50 room though. Just within acceptable ranges of cleanliness. Had big ice machines though, we’d fill the coolers up.

Dang! I need to fish more! I haven’t been on the water in a few years, too stinkin’ busy to even know the regs!

There’s a nice rip/bar alongside Paris isl, in the broad. An artificial reef there as well. 30’ to 6’ shelf. And if you’re at that reef, any of the creeks along Paris isl are great for an inshore slam.
Fish the humps in the river for Spanish and cobia. Can’t keep the cobia but make for a nice fight and pic.
Rose isl cut, and the chechessee is good. Nice flat at the W end of rise isl and a 40 ft hole at the moth of the cut. Head to S shore and go W for another good series of creeks and flats. Lots of good oyster beds.
The S side of the river is much saltier than the N.
all this is the Broad.
Broad river landing is nice, go slow and head at a SSE direction when leaving at low.

Downtown sand bar will be a party and nice daydock downtown to. Just saying.

Thanks Bluegoose. Lots of help. If any of you guys come to Charleston let me know. We’ll hook you up.

Thanks for everyone’s help. We had a decent day. The wind was blowing and the water was rough which limited how far we could run. We did fish the Parris Island reef and caught several 3-4ft sharks. Had a big run that made a TLD 15 look like a Zebco. No obvious shark damage on the bait so I’m guessing a big red. The Spanish were jumping everywhere but they were single fish. They never seemed to school up so couldn’t really fish them. Tried fishing the bridge but the waves and current were so bad we couldn’t keep the anchor caught. Tried in some back creeks later in the day. Caught 3 bonnet heads. We also couldn’t find bait which was another issue. Had to use frozen mullet. Hopefully next time down we’ll get better conditions.

i fished the PRS Saturday. Didn’t see a Cobia either. Couldn’t keep a cut bait on the bottom without black nose and sharp nose sharks. I was solo, which is unusual, and had to cut back to a two rod spread. Triple headers aren’t that fun by yourself.

Also didn’t see a lot of bait balls. I usually can sabiki up some greenies, but not a one yesterday.

picked up a trout on the grass lines inshore, no reds. again.

All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.
