why are all of the redfish fishermen wearing those face masks? I swear I passed 20 boats and everyone was wearing one…what gives?
It’s a millennial thing - they are called buffs. They make a version for the hot weather to keep the sun off you and one for cold weather to keep you warm. They also apparently contribute to the “cool” factor.

Its the easiest way to catch at least twice as many fish. You can also buy a yeti and a huk shirt which will make you double your catch as well. If you want the winning edge you really need a yeti a buff and huk gear. When the fish see the logos they want it. Fish are very cliquey with the need to fit in. Its every fishes dream to stare down a pair of costas, see a buff, huk shirt and the inside of a yeti. I like when you see someone in high priced fishing gear and they got a cheap combo. $400 fishing outfit check, 40 dollar combo check skills to catch fish x. Buffs do have a place, but most are over marketed crap like lots of fishing gear.
I’m a huge fan of buffs. Not for the reasons above.
- They are hands down the best gnat solution when they are really bad
- They are awesome when you are on plane in really cold weather, it keeps your face way warmer than without
- They keep the sun off your face. I prefer to cover up rather than use sunscreen. Thats just me.
- I don’t care what people think of me. I’m gonna use what works for me!

Like everything Optiker said, and not so much on the other comments…
they keep the sun off of your face, neck, and ears better than any form of sunscreen and with no mess… including bug spray… add that with the warm factor in the cold equals tough to beat! They even make ‘polar buffs’ out of thicker material for added warmth. Once you utilize them, they become a necessity IMO.

I like how some people wear buffs because of what other people think
and
Some people won’t wear a buff because of what other people think.
It ain’t just a “millennial thing” and it has nothing to do with any “cool factor”, at least for me. See Optiker’s reasons.

I also wear long-sleeve shirts and a hat. No one thinks I’m “cool”, not even me.

So what it comes down to is they are fine if you are catching reds in the thirty or less range, but when you hit that 40 mark…

You’ll typically find the nay-sayers don’t and/or haven’t even used them. You want a testimony on Buff-style apparel, talk with Mark Nichols. He’ll show you the scars that are the reason he wears Buff gloves, face covers, a hat and long sleeve shirts when he’s on the water.
Don’t knock’em until you try’em.

I wondered the same thing??? Kinda like wearing your PFGs to Sunday service:clown_face:. Quality sunscreen and a wide brim hat is more my speed.

I started wearing one for this reason. If you like to fish early mornings in the fall, the gnats can get so thick it can be hard to breath. I throw on a buff and don’t have to worry about choking on those things. I still do a hat and sunscreen most of the time, but am not opposed to the buff. I just don’t like them as much in the hot months. Like others said, I am on a 6-month regimen with the dermatologist and after spending my entire youth in the sun fishing and surfing I am now very careful, probably too little to late, but try to protect myself as much as possible. I am glad that manufacturers found something that younger people think is cool to wear that also protects them from the sun. I say if you like it go for it and don’t worry about what other people may think about it.
Confirmed 7cs has a yeti, a buff, huk gear and not a single red over 40 inches lol. Maybe fritz can help you.
