I think Optiker hit it dead on - they have multiple uses…if that works for you. Comical (or maybe not) that there always “those people” that have to bash anything that doesn’t fit into what they know or like - Buff’s, Yeti’s, etc. Good for the Millenials, they have better access to better equipment and products than we did. It’s a double-edge. There are some things they are never going to know or experience because they don’t have to. In some cases, good for them that they never do. In other cases, it’s a shame they won’t. Leaves us stories to tell them! I have a couple of Buffs thinking I would like them more than applying chemical sunscreen that is probably causing another cancer while protecting me from one. I wear them some, less than I thought. I’ve probably used them more for skiing than anything else. I like them as lightweight neck gaiter that I can pull up on my face when needed in the cold. I have the ones that are in bandana color design so it doesn’t look as Buff trendy - looks more like old school bandana. I did an Amazon fishing trip back in the mid-90’s and sure wish they had Buffs back then - that sun is unbelievably intense when you’re just south of the equator. Sunscreen doesn’t work, your skin had to be covered properly, even your hands.
Its the easiest way to catch at least twice as many fish. You can also buy a yeti and a huk shirt which will make you double your catch as well. If you want the winning edge you really need a yeti a buff and huk gear. When the fish see the logos they want it. Fish are very cliquey with the need to fit in. Its every fishes dream to stare down a pair of costas, see a buff, huk shirt and the inside of a yeti. I like when you see someone in high priced fishing gear and they got a cheap combo. $400 fishing outfit check, 40 dollar combo check skills to catch fish x. Buffs do have a place, but most are over marketed crap like lots of fishing gear.
Holy hell 40, you just described me to a T. With the exception of my fishing gear, I only use top notch Shimano, St Croix and G Loomis. I guess all the marketing hype got me and I fell victim but at least I catch fish while wearing it and drinking water from my Yeti.
I do wear a buff, not because it looks cool but because it keeps me protected from the sun, warmer when it’s chilly out running wide open and also it is the best protection from the gnats.
I wear a buff, long pants, long sleeve shirt, and a Hat every time I fish. If I cared how “cool” I look my belly wouldn’t poke out so far. I have a poling skiff and spend a ton of time where the gnats are thick, and the sun is beating down on you. Plus, I’d rather wear a buff than have skin cancer.
I hope y’all know I was just covering the general nonsense that surrounds a lot of those things. The pfg, buff, huk, yetti all get it pretty hard. Personally i buy what I need and can afford. Some people buy it because they can afford it. I really don’t care what people use. If your on the water enough there is the turning point that justifies the need and value. I probally spent over 100 bucks this year on sunscreen and bug spray.

Why’d you have to go and make fun of me because I dont have a 40in red? I got feelings too.

Same page, just can’t bring myself to put that mask on.
A good day at the Derm is “Hey Honey, no stitches!”
Watching my Dad get his nosed carved on several times before he died made me take sun protection more seriously. And, I’m at the point in my life where I don’t care what someone thinks about what I am wearing.

I’ve seen pictures of you and your fishin outfit DF. that’s how I dress. superb Scott-Irish breeding leads to fair skin, rugged good looks, and a penchant for whiskey
Like I said earlier, if anyone chooses to avoid looking “silly” over the effectiveness of a Buff, go to the shallow water expo this year and talk to Mark Nichols (if he’ll be there this year) and ask him what’s more important to him.
But hey, if it’s more important for some to NOT look like they’ve bought into anything “trendy,” more power to you and your insecurities.
10-4 on learning the hard way. My dad, granddad, and several of my friends had been “carved on”. Noses, ears, foreheads, hands and shoulders. It is not pretty and is a scary thought. I know of a few who are no longer with us due to skin cancer. Docs try to make sure they get it all - sometimes takes multiple carvings on same spot. I ware long sleeves in summer too. I do use a lot of sunscreen too but, hate how it makes you feel hot and sticky. I prefer to cover up. A wide brim hat is minimum for me and if I ware a cap it’s a buff under it. A day on the water will cook you. I heard Mark Nichols talk on it at the Expo before too. It’s not looking cool - it’s a necessity to protect yourself. The sun is no joke. With age comes wisdom.

You said it, especially the rugged good looks. Though I prefer tequila to whiskey.

You seem bitter again. You want me to make some calls and see if I can get you sponsored? Well, more of a 5% off coupon code at checkout. Let me know.
I remember several years ago and wearing a pair of Crocks offshore fishing… My buddies gave me heck for a long time. Now they wear them.
I like Optikers response. think I might get one and give it a try. Crazy as this sound the gnats ate me up last weekend working some areas on the coosawhatchie.
Maybe some wear them so nobody recognizes them and takes a picture and sends it to the wife or the boss?
