My dad works at the sporting goods counter at the Walmart on Dorchester Road. He knows guns and is a bass catching machine. I think he may be the only person that knows anything about outdoors that works back there though. I buy all my offshore tackle from AGAT or Haddrells.
I tend to go to Haddrell’s in West Ashley, like the guys there and they are always helpful. Charleston Angler gives off a different vibe but have nothing negative to say about them. Went to PSA once, and while they have a large selection, feels more like a Dick’s to me. I have no trouble buying from any of the three, but prefer Haddrells.

You can’t use great selection to describe PSA and the compare it to Dick’s. While Dick’s has stuff people need/want it hardly has the layout or localized selection PSA has. The only thing Dick’s and PSA have in common is they are both larger stores than HPT or Charleston Angler.
If PSA starts carrying golf clubs and exercise equipment we can start comparing the two.
Haddrells West Ashely is great. Very nice and always willing to help. Prices are very good and the guys seem genuine about advice.
PSA is great too. Were lucky to get a PSA for the gun store, the fishing side is simply a bonus. If they were in West Ashley I’d be in trouble. Not going all the way to Mt. P just for some bait.
A lot of excellent fishing knowledge has come out of that building… from (as far back as I can remember) the days of Billy Brightwell and Johns Rod and Reel to what is now Haddrells of West Ashley. You cant go wrong with Haddrells

buying local does not make a product work better, but it (**() sure does keep money in your hometown which ultimately goes back in your pocket in the end…but maybe that is irrelevant to some and therefor I congratulate them on being so financially sound the local economy is irrelevant! Seemed like a valid question IMO
PSA are good folks from all I know, and we welcome them to town and feel confident they will find a nice niche…and I look forward to meeting their management team and hanging out with them sometime soon! They have a great inventory when I went by and wish I had been able to speak with them at the time. I would however say I don’t think they have MORE selection than we do knowing what all is in here.
I guess it was conveniently overlooked but I’m pretty sure it was stated that not only are all of the employees in the PSA store “local” (and with the store being located in Mt Pleasant, they pay all the same “local” taxes as every other business in the area) but the company was born right here in SC. The idea was hatched while the now owner was serving this great state and this great country as a member of the SC National Guard in Iraq. Seemed like a valid response IMO.
Bottom line, Mt Pleasant and the Charleston area are lucky to have the fishing shops they do. I’d be willing to bet that when Mike opened the doors on the first Haddrell’s, he aspired to be as good as the shops that preceded him. Then, as his business grew, he went from want to be “as good as” his predecessors to wanting to be better than them. I’m sure PSA didn’t come to town thinking they were going to run the competition out of town. Haddrell’s and Charleston Angler have put in the time both on the water and in their local communities. I see PSA as the fledgling wanting to be “as good as” HPT and CA and, one day, when they’ve paid their dues, they will aspire to be better than them. If you’re not striving to be the best, why try at all.
Count your blessing and consider yourselves lucky to have the choices and options you do. We don’t have it so good here in the Lexington/Columbia area. Competition is always good for the consumer.
As far as inshore inventory and selection, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that. Please don’t double charge me the next time I come to snag some live bait for saying that.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

Best comment in this thread, IMO.
Everyone has been so hell-bent on being a homer they’re missing the big picture. Is having more options a bad thing for the consumer, community, and economy? I think not. I shop at HPT and PSA. There are items one has that the other doesn’t have. Before, I was forced to shop on line when I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Now, between the two shops, I rarely if ever have to do that anymore. As a consumer, I call that a “win.” Plus, with both shops doing different outreach activities, that’s yet one more way in which the consumer, community, and economy benefits. Again, I have yet to find anything negative. I guess haters are going to hate because ignorance is bliss.
Haddrells has been around a long time and have great locations and are very knowledgeable, went into PSA in Mt. Pleasant last week for the first time and was impressed with what all they had as far as fishing tackle. Very nice store but just a bad location being that far out.
Just depends on where you’re coming from. I think in the next 2-3 years, when the development that is working its way up 17 moves further out that way, they (PSA) will be in a much better position but I agree with you that, as of right now, they are a bit far out there unless you’re headed to Paradise, McClellanville, or some of the other small landings up HWY 17.

Now yall be nice and go fishing!
Well-thought-out and articulated response. It’s this type of wisdom and class that’ll keep me going back to Haddrell’s…
“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

Given our short time in the area, we appreciate just being in this conversation. We understand what it takes to earn your respect, trust and business and we plan to do just that. We never intended on being a flash in the pan so our plans are centered around sustainability and longevity. Our doors are open to everyone, regardless which shop you work for and/or choose to shop with. HPT and CA are institutions in this area. Their successes and impacts they’ve had in their local communities and the fishing community set the bar high and gives PSA Mt Pleasant something to shoot for everyday. We’re dedicated to achieving and maintaining the product selection, pricing structure, and customer service that brings you in and more importantly, keeps you coming back. We appreciate the support you all have given us to this point and we are excited and very optimistic about the future and what it holds for all of us.
