When you say surf setup do you mean just one rod and reel? Or do you mean rods, reels, spikes, carts ect ect.

Rod and reel

what are you wanting to catch? fish under 15lbs or big stuff?

I like to have light tackle, makes it more fun. I have a set up for bull reds and sharks already but wanting like a 6000 reel and under setup?

I use a penn battle 3000 w 10lb braid on a 6.6" ugly stick on calm days and a 5000 w15lb braid on 7ft on rougher ones. Ive had no probs pulling in bonnets or 30"reds w either. both tied with 15lb mono leader w/ a j-knot.

Are surf rods pointless?

your talking like 10-12 footers?

im sure they have their place in big waves, but ive never seen the need here.

Gotcha how about conventional? Ever used em’?

if im casting, im using spinning.

As a kid, my first set-up was a 6’-6" med. action 2pc. with 60’s vintage Mitchell 300. Caught tons of fish, including door mat sized Flounder. No problems. Long rods are for big surf. And the longer the rod does not always mean longer casting. I can cast my 8’ set-up with 3oz +bait with 15lb. mono, 70-80yrds. easily. Really most any 7’ Largemouth rig will catch nearly anything in the surf with 15-20 test. My 2?..spend more than you would think on the reel than the rod, surfishin’ is rough on reels.

Good Luck!

I’ve not personally found it financially advantageous to buy the higher priced equipment when surf fishing. Yes, you do get what you pay for, but with the surf, I inevitably get a lot of sand and salt in places it ought not be.

I do rinse and clean my stuff after each trip, but I don’t break down and lube all that frequently. I’ve found that for most surf-fishing things, esp. if tossing bait rather than lures, I prefer rigs under $75. They tend to still be pretty good quality, last 4-5 years or more (although not always), and get lubed once or twice a year, tops.

If I had a much more expensive setup, I’d feel obligated to break it down more often, and honestly it just doesn’t float my boat to be doing that all the time… with my current life (husband, father, employee, deacon, homeowner, etc).

I use a Battle 6000 with a 7ft rod. 20# braid and 30# leader. Some times smaller set up according on what i am fishing for.

my cheapest setup and what i use strickly for flounder is an abu garcia cardinal 104 on a cheap 7ft mitchell. 10lb braid. its taken a hell of a beating and you can prob get 2 complete setups for the 150

My philosophy as well. I might think differently if I was fishing up north for stripers where you’re casting plugs from the beach the whole time, but for just throwing bait then throwing them in sand spikes I use pretty modestly priced stuff.

Diawa BG would be the reel to keep you in your price point. Nothing special only 3 bearings holds up I’m the surf. The rod would be specific to what you’re throwing with it.

Spinfisher 6500 with any decent 9’+ rod. That reel has been baptized in the holy saltwater several times but holds up so well. Ebay for the reel, box or tackle store for the rod. $150 all day

Don’t ever buy reels off of eBay that have been used. Shook a cup of sand out of a Tiagra 80 that was purchased off eBay in the shop earlier this year. Buy new get the warranty. Well worth it.

I prefer old style stuff-2- 10’ Beach Runners, 1-12’ Star. All using conventional Penn Squidders.
Good for throwing into the wind and for handling some of the big stuff that lives near the beach.
Rig w/ 50pd braid & 60 pd mono.
Reels have lasted as long as 50+ years with decent care, rods now 10 years old showing no sign of wear.
On average, over time, less expensive than replacing rigs every few years.
My fishing partner loves cheap gear!
His rods and reels break frequently-usually just when they should not.
