Betsy Ross Bouy Gone

We made it out to the Ross today (saturday) to find no bouy.
Fished in sloppy seas for 3 hrs+ without a bite. We were right on the spots too.
Moved to the 45 and caught a few short BSB. It got more windy so we headed in early.
Oh, and we were the only boat out there. Guess there were some reasons for that.

The Betsy Ross, was closed today because the Pope is in town! When they close it up, they take in the buoy:wink::face_with_head_bandage::smiley:

Someone probably tied up to it with a big boat in rough seas

I guess that's possible.

The sardines ate it…

Just wondering, do these actually break loose from time to time and drift aimlessly with the current? If so, I would hope they would remain upright to be picked up on radar in the dark or poor vis.

My guess is if the cable broke near bottom it may provide weight to hold it up some. If at or near top, maybe not.

Thanks,
NN

They do break loose. Another bouy was reported gone on the main offshore discussion page this week.
They must lay over quite a bit when not anchored. I’m pretty sure they are just “lost at sea”. Some may be found and returned. Not sure of that. They are some what of a hazard like a log or any other floating large thing without lights etc.

I reported one missing out of Fripp Inlet, can’t remember that little reef about 8 miles out. Anyway, it was replaced in about a week. I’m not sure if it had been in the works for a while or not, but it was back faster than I could have imagined. Of co urse, it is only 40’ deep or so there.

good tip
I’ll try to report it to dnr

I’m just a DY but I always thought those were the responsibility of the Coast Guard to take care of?

I looked up a direct email address of a person at DNR and emailed them about the bouy. Here’s the response I got.

Thanks. We’ll get to it as soon as we can, but it may not be until our research/work boat gets out of the shipyard where she is going to have to have a new deck crane installed.
We appreciate the heads up.

I guess one of us with a gps needs to take out a clorox bottle and a brick tied to some mason twine!
