Betsy Ross has a lot of sharks on it. A month ago we caught 5 nice cobia at the betsy ross with live menhaden but cobia is closed now. If you want to catch bottom fish, you really need to push out of the tybeee trough area to at least 100 ft. Theres a lot of live bottom out there but we went last week and fished all the way to R8 and picked at sea bass, triggers and b liners. Couldn’t find any groupers and the bite was slow. Tons of amberjack though if you want to pull on a line.
Trolling is slow to nothing from what Ive heard but I haven’t run to the ledge since early june. I was tempted to troll between R7 and R8 last week but it was a bit choppy and no weed lines. We did see a bunch of flyers.

go to mapsunique.com
order the Beaufort sc (port Royal/St.Helena) map
this is a good start. you will have to “prospect” the areas/numbers
Jasmil, what ^^^he said. This is just a pic I snapped of a map I have taped to wall in shop. The Maps Unique is much better.

I’ve fished the Ross several times since the federal Cobia closure, including today and every time we’ve had no problem immediately jigging up Cobia without bait. Every time we’ve been the only boat there, and that’s including weekends like today where I’m stunned nobody is taking advantage of this world class fishery.
I get it. If your goal is to bring home meat then catch and release Cobia fishing is futile. I have plenty of fish in the freezer and just love to catch fish. When I can pull up cobia on baitless jigs, that’s my idea of a great day. I will say that the decreased fishing pressure seems to have a very real effect.
Today we had a huge audience at the Ross in the form of about 15 barracudas, the largest group I’ve seen there in a while. The other big difference today versus other recent visits is I didn’t see any spades (although sure I saw them on the sonar, just no visual contact) and no big remoras which had been quite prevalent there the past few times.
This is the first trip to the Ross that trolling was unproductive. We’ve hit kings every other time in the last several weeks. We didn’t spend much time trolling though, only a few passes.
We also fished the tire reef and caught the largest Cuda I’ve seen in a couple years. There were 3 other boats out there and I didn’t see much activity. We paused at the eagles nest on our way to the Ross and did not see much on the sonar to warrant a drop and continued on.
Hope to not see you all at the Ross again next week. Just kidding, get out there you crazy people. I don’t care if it’s a slow bite or no bite I’d rather be fishing. Here I am (and you are) on an Internet fishing forum because I’m not on the boat at this moment. The addiction is real, people!!!
Thanks for the reports I’ll be out there somewhere this weekend
