Thanks for the info, yeah is see the weather,I might try the Congaree River if I can get my boat put in. Is the landings open yet?
I will not go to lake world if it is the last bait shop ever. I got stuck in traffic one evening called to ask if he would wait 15 mins. after closing time, he replied “I have things to do” I asked if he knew a place near by that would be open he said no and hung up. I found a place about a 1/2-1 mile up the road behind a shell station I believe. They were open and gave me a number to call if they were ever closed. All I had to do after that was call the number if I was buying at least 5 dozen which I always do. I told them about calling lake world and their reply was it doesn’t surprise me. Needless to say I have not been to lake world in at least 5 years.
Striper Junkie, posts like that don’t help anyone. Richard has done more for the Striped Bass fishing community than you ever will… Everybody has their preferences. Where would we be without marketplace competition? Did you stop to think that anybody can have a bad day? Lets give the people that support our passion for fishing a break and not post derogatory comments about them in a public forum. We need them all in business. Spend your dollars where ever you wish but just think about what would happen if there was no competition.

Well spoken woody. This post was not meant to open up a discussion to bash other shops. Just to let everyone know the shop was now open during the week. Heck I did this exact same thing back on the fri before marks big tx in early march. Guy called in traffic on 77 and I told him we weren’t even open (I just happened to be there checking on bait for the next day and answered a ringing phone) but he wanted me to wait for him and I said I couldn’t do it.
I always tell people if they want to bash ANY bait man or ANY shop, then they need to go catch their own bait and they would find out real quick they have no room to talk.
Same way with gizzards. You hear people all the time crying cause they can’t buy gizzards. Go throw a net, and some do and they will tell u the same thing. It’s not easy.
Then when u go up on gizzard prices people want to complain about prices. Go tear up 4 nets in one trip. (300-400$ gone!) All for a load of gizzards your gonna get 500$ out of. But don’t forget about fuel and your time.
Good luck to all the shops around the lake on the upcoming heavy bait selling season!
Sorry guys rant over…lol…carry one.

Bait men and dock lights are touchy subjects on this forum. Tread lightly.
Sorry. Had to say it. Carry on.
SJ, I can see how you would think that it is not much to ask for a bait shop to stay open for you if you expect to be there in 15 min, but you have to consider how often they get a similar request…and then, only to have a person show later than they expected… or not show at all.
Think of it like a day care with a parent calling to say they will be there 15 min after closing. No big deal when looking at it through the perspective of a parent who is on time 99% of the time. But, when you have 20+ kids there, I imagine that happens all the time and people with a business have a life too.
I understand part of what pissed you off was the demeanor of the person on the phone. Like said above, anyone can have a bad day. Not sure who you talked to, but to be honest, I can’t imagine Richard talking that way to a customer on his worst day ever.
This is more typical of the kind of guy Richard is…Many years ago, I was down at the Saluda River boat ramp talking to Richard while he was filling his bait boat with river water after closing up shop. A guy stopped by and desperately wanted to buy some bait, but Richard was only filling his tank. He told the guy to hold on, then follow him back to the shop and he would sell him some.
If I remember correctly, the guy wound up buying a dozen.

Chip,

Just regular size herring. It’s not as small as it has been but its not the size of lake murray spawn baits either…It will stay that way till next week.
Very good possibility may see a load of med-large gizzards and MAYBE one more load of ocean herring NEXT WEEK. Watching water temps and seeing if we will get rain end of this week right now. If everything works out gizzards should make their normal run and if water temps stay down ocean herring will be able to be transported.
When water temps get to high the ocean herring don’t do well crammed into a transport tank for over 2hrs.

striper junkie…Don’t let P.C dictate your life …choose the bait shop you like . Be honest with all .A lifetime ban is a family tradition with some . I think it is a form of capitalism
God bless the bait shops!! I remember when we would drive from Laurens to Calhon Falls and catch bait then load up and head to Murray to fish and be there at daylight! I was a lot younger 40 years ago tho and gas was around $.70 and had a smaller boat to pull!
Yep! My first experience fishing live bait for stripers involved a flyrod and trying to catch small bream. Sometimes we’d take a couple of hours to get the bait we wanted. We’d hook them near the head on drifted downrods. The stripers would hit them softly and then make a mad dash. We’d let them run with the reels free spooling until they stopped. When they’d take back off again we’d come tight and set the hook hard. Never caught anything under 6 or 7 lbs., but sometimes we’d only get 3 or 4 bites in half a day. That’s also when I decided I needed to learn how to fish with baitcasting reels.
The baitmen make it very easy for us to have fun.
Anybody ever wonder why DNR use to suggest people not put Gizzard Shad in their pond for fear they would over run it? And now here we sit with no Gizzard Shad to fish with. When I lived near Lake Lanier, there were 3 or 4 ponds around that were loaded with Gizzards. I’d pay a man 2 Bucks to launch my big Sea Pro in his 11 acre pond, throw the net for an hour and catch 50 primo baits. And you would not believe the size of some of the Largemouth I would catch doing it as well… The pond was probably 5 or 6 feet deep over most of it and about 10-12 feet at the spillway…How hard would it be for Lexington County to maintain a trophy Largemouth pond for the residents? complete with a nice forage base of Shad …Imagine if Gibson Pond was slap full of Gizzards…Or you could drive up to the Broad River diversion dam fish ladder and toss the net with bait tank in the back of your truck…Does anyone believe the Shad would be easier to catch on Lake Murray if it didn’t get stocked with a million Striped Bass per year? Just thinking out loud here… Why do the baitmen go to Wateree to catch Gizzards to sell on Lake Murray instead of catching them here? Lake Murray is a pretty fertile lake. Now think about this, if all the fishermen that liked to fish with Gizzard Shad on Lake Murray, took half the money they spent in one year to fish with Gizzard shad, and all met up at the South Carolina State House grounds, what could we buy? lol I bet if I were fishing at Lake Lanier, Lake Hartwell,or Clarks Hill,I could go buy some Gizzards and go fish today…If we pooled our resources and brainpower we could solve this problem.

So we should not stock striped bass so we can have more gizzard shad???

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all…but it’s not unreasonable to think if the State would go to that effort to create an awesome fishery, why can’t they help us take full advantage and help us get some Shad to fish with. They have some responsibility for the shortage. Is it safer for us to continue to catch shad from one system and transport it to another? What’s the next invasive specie or disease to be introduced? Most of the time, I can go take care of my needs for having Shad anyway. If you aren’t willing to throw a net, you shouldn’t be allowed to complain anyway right? Unfortunately, I’ve been laid up for a month with bad back. Haven’t been able to ride up to Wateree and get me some…I’m just aggravated that that’s what I have to do when there should be an easier solution. Just fishing with some herring might satisfy most, but not me…
