Big Eyes! Yellowfin! - S4G report 5-20-17 Pics!

Billy splashed Freeman 42LR hull number one less than a year ago, we have pushed the limits of range and adventure ever since! This past weekend was no exception!

Middle of the week the weather was shaping up but the fishing was slow. Time to spread the big girls wings a bit and make a run after them!

Topped her off with 800 gallons of fuel, ice, beverages, food, tackle, and bait! Tuna time!

Left Shem Creek at 3pm Friday afternoon after a pep talk from one of our local captains. We had a plan, a mission, a hill to take! Some people said we were nuts, others seemed jealous, the rest just grabbed a seat to watch the action.

Cleared the jetties and pointed toward the Georgetown Hole! Got there in time to make a few bottom drops, catch some supper, and plot a course. Over 300 miles north of the GTH was our final destination. Did some quick calculating and figured our speed to get to the grounds by sunrise.

Trent whipped up some killer hamburgers on the grill and we set in for the night. Plan was to take shifts and some how I got the best end of that deal! Trent woke me up and said we have 15 more miles, don’t let us hit anything! In no time, the glow from the east was upon us and it was time to set the trap!

Wind was blowing a bit but nothing bad. Green streak came out of no where and piled on the left teaser, Dropped the short flat back and came tight! Boom! ZZZZZZ!!!

Made quick work of the dolphin but that’s not why we ran 400 miles to get here…

As the sun broke the horizon we could see the charter fleet filing in. The big Carolina flared sporties arrived on scene like a ■■■■■ of frigates on a school bait.

We took our place in line and before you know it the left side Marsh tacky long rigger comes tight and POW! Release clip lets go and the old 30W screams to life! This ain’t a dolphin boys!

POW!!! LONG RIGHT! LONG RIG

Thanks for posting your adventure for us to enjoy !

Scott, you do create the best reports…probably because you go on all the best adventures. Thanks for sharing. I felt like I was there…almost.

Tuna is my bucket list fish. I hope I can get one some day. So, hats off to y’all for making me want it even more.

But…I gotta ask the obvious question…why splash out of Charleston? Wouldn’t it have been cheaper and quicker to drive the boat to say…Little River or Southport NC? Just curious why the killer ride, unless it was for fun.

To think it all started with an old 18 ft. Whaler and an old wet Grady!

How does that work with the fishing licenses for everyone? I know you had to have a Federal HMS permit, but did everyone also need a North Carolina State license since ya’ll docked in Oregon Inlet?

Yes sir we all 6 did! Was told by 2 different captains to be sure all our fishing licenses and safety gear were spot on as we would most likely get checked coming into the inlet.

The CG met us at the mouth of the inlet but they were going to help a broken down sporty.

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Would have to delete the sound. We get carried away talking trash at times!:smiley:

Great report. So does the coast guard check almost every visiting boat on a daily coming into the inlet? Or is it just one boat randomly checking fishing boats coming into the inlet?

Obviously, considerable research, planning and co-ordination went into pulling that trip off. Well done!
