Went out yesterday to try and tag some more Blacktips with SCDNR… Got to the spot and set up and not 15 mins into fishing here comes 5 kitesurfers! I was born and raised on Folly Beach, I cant remember there being this many kitesurfers when I was younger!! Anyway they kept getting VERY close to my line when finally it happened, One guy got snagged in braid! His response to my friend yelling at him was simply… This is a Kite spot bro… And then for some reason he kept telling us he lives here and we should go home! What the hell?!? Okay I LIVE HERE TOO! Does anyone know the law on Folly for kite surfing in the breakers? I mean what if I wasn’t fishing and my kid was in the surf when he came rolling through, Either way I lost my temper but all this BRO did was walk away and refuse to face us. After that BULL happened we ended up hooking a BIG OLE SURF RED! Is it October already! Check out this stud!
Hello I have same experience this morning and on the same spot as with you, We are probably talking the same group of kite surfer check my post for folly report 8/26/17 . They are very arrogant and rude. I am really interested to know the rules in folly about kite surfing.
Yeah, they must have been out all day because we were there evening into night. They were very rude to us but when we didn’t back down they ran back to there group. They are a bunch of cowards… Dude tried to tell me it was Kite spot and I should leave!!! Are you kidding me… Everyone Surf fishes that spot on Folly. If anything its a Well know fishing spot! I’m gonna contact the city of folly beach, My father spent 20 plus years as a Police officer with Folly, I want to find out if any of his old co workers are still working there and get some information on the laws.
Looking forward to hearing from you about the rules…
Thats one bruiser red there F-fisher , congrats;;; keep us posted…
Very, Very nice Red! The days are getting shorter, water temp is dropping…getting close now.
Kite/ Wind surfers…I have not had a direct incounter with them, that is to say actually had to speak with someone. But I’ve had to wave and throw up my hands to try and warn them of the hazards. Most of the time they steer clear. Did have one guy, he had to ditch his kite to keep from getting close lined…it was funny. I have not been able to find any specific rules for Folly about windsurfing, Both IOP and Sullivans have some specific rules. The most interesting to me is; Must stay 100yds from the waters edge and at least 2-3 kite lengths from any swimmers. At that distance there is no hazard of getting into rigs fished on the bottom. There are also specfic launch areas that apply during the summer months. Also read on ChuckTownKites that EVERYONE has right of way over Kites. Technically though it is unlawfull to impede or obstruct a fisherman, leagal fishing. Have had more than one IOP officers tell me, after telling him I was leaving because of surfers and paddle boarders, that I (as a fisherman) had more right to be on the beach.
So if you are a surfer, paddle boarder, kite/wind dude… WE are NOT in YOUR way.</font id=“size3”>
A large weighted treble hook with some 80lb power pro should take care of their ass. Dont forget the bat to kill the sharks unless you run into any. Also use side arm cast. This it more likely to get flesh than kite but either will work. If you get flesh they are less likely going to want to fight. After you catch a few or they realize what you are trying to do they will give you room to fish

LOL! You guys are crazy! I say we all go out to that spot on a super windy day and just line that section of beach with fisherman. Give them no room. Jerks!
I’ve been going to folly my entire life and everyone knows on windy days they fill up the north end. I will agree the club is building but don’t act like this is new. I mean you fish just north of the biggest surfing spot in town, this is up there with complaining about people on a public beach. The dnr should of informed them that they need to move or go around your line. I’ve been out there and they show up and I ask them to go deep around my lines and everyone is cool. They surf I fish and we all get o enjoy the PUBLIC BEACH. If you ask some one nice vs making a command it works better. For a fyi almost the whole kite surf crew trains mama and kick boxing and are respectable guys. I know a lot of them… It sounds like in your post you mention them being there all day and you arriving in the evening… Just saying
Nice red, conflict is bad for everybody, we should try to minimize it

All,
Here’s some clarification from folly beach about rules and ordinance information. Hopefully this clarify the public use of beach in Folly.
The way I understand the ordinance is that if they seem to be a hazard in the area with swimmers or fisherman like us we can ask them to move to an area that is far from us. This always comes with asking them in a nice way to prevent altercation. But if they seem to neglect the safety of everybody then I think you have the right to call the police and report them.
Please feel free to comment if you have same understanding or different opinion with the ordinance. I also ask some specific questions to Chief Andrew Gilreath and he answer them all.
Here’s the link of full ordinance: http://library.amlegal.com/nxt/gateway.dll/South%20Carolina/follybeach/follybeachsouthcarolinacodeofordinances?f=templates$fn=default.htm$3.0$vid=amlegal:follybeach_sc
I have alway’s considered who got there first. If I did and I’m fishing and they roll in on my lines I would try to warn them nicely. If they ignore my warning and get hooked it’s not my fault. Now If I go out and they are ripping through an area and they got there first I walk on and fish somewhere else. I don’t want them in my spread,it can’t do it any good. It has happened to me before. To me I have always considered the first person out- has the right of way. Good post Jarvis, it seems the law is on your side. But not everyone cares for the law, nor know what it is, nor wants someone else to explain it to them. Most young bucks throw fists first, and think later. Mr. Fisher did you get a measurement on that bruiser:smiley: Did it bite on your metal liter shark rig and what bait did it hit? Great catch.
Thanks Run! And yeah he took a shark bait. Not a huge bait tho, we are fishing for blacktips so he took a small steak of spanish mak.
