well this time last year i found a fresh stingray on the beach with a chunk bitten out of it and “caught” my first bonnethead of the year in a tide pool at sullivans…anyone know if the big sharks are close to the beach yet this year?
Haven’t been able to hit the beach since new year’s but the BIG black tips and lemons should start filtering through anytime now and there might still be some sandbars and sand tigers around. If you use casted rigs make sure you have lots of line spooled up. The lemons I’ve seen brought up on the beach this time of year range from 7ft to biggest I’ve seen taped out right at 9.5ft. I’m looking to try my luck out at breach tomorrow afternoon for some reds and black drum and a casted rod for toothies just in case.
i have about 400 yards of 65lb braid on my heaviest shark rod that handled a 5 foot blacktip no problem and id love to put it to the test on a bigger one. dont have any stingrays in the freezer yet but i have a ton of shad that otta work once yakked out to proper position. im thinking station 18 area and dropping it at the end of the dropoff for starters but well see when i can get there in a few days.
ONN, the biggest bonnethead I’ve ever caught in my life was on Folly pier in late December. Since you can’t deck a shark at Folly, I had to let him cut off on the pilings. I can only estimate him at 48", which is pretty stout for a bonnet.
Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.
ONN, should get ya a decent one. If I remember right the 9.5fter was caught on a 4/0 casting setup. We’ll have to try to make a trip or two in the next few months. I have some big gear. Maybe even take a trip btb.
Go fish Isle of Palms Lighthouse for big sharks.
bigcountryboy: sounds good my schedule gets a bit weird but we can def try to meet up sometime. all my surf gear is spinning but as i mentioned before i have plenty of shad pieces in the freezer i can toss in for bait.
kingofthepier: i remember that pic…didnt we each get a nice blacktip from different beaches but pretty much the same weekend?
he didn’t catch the shark…somebody else caught it.he just had his picture made with it.besides Cubans don’t know how to fish.
Just went out today, with jnail and racrx’s gf, lisa. Took out my avet, makaira and 6/0wide. Used fresh shad, had a tail bitten off one, but otherwise all we got was a puffer. Only fish for a short time, but planning to resume our weekly outings starting this coming weekend (4/12).
Hey, Sharky it is going to be a good year at the pier. See you there.
OhioNavyNuke, yes we did and it was a good weekend for us.
I plan on being there some…got some new gear, just waiting on the water to warm up.

Thank you. I’m dying to fight a big shark in the surf.
Now is the time to do it Mikey! Have a reel that holds plenty of line, (my Avet LX6 holds almost 600 yds of 25# mono), be willing to wade out to cast beyond the 2nd or 3rd sand bar, use fresh bait and wait for results. Any beach that isnt crowded with tourist will do just fine, They’re everywhere:imp:
