Big something at Folly Pier, 7/11.

Went to Folly this morning and caught a few fish in the surf on the outgoing tide. Just small stuff: Red, whiting, and blues, along with a couple of shark pups, all on frozen shrimp. Family is in town so decided to try again tonight at the pier.

Got to the pier around 7:45, to find near identical conditions as the morning: Overcast, with an outgoing tide. First cast out on my standard fishfinder rig, I had something massive grab my bait and go. Ran in toward shore and then stopped dead by a piling on the pier. A few folks said I was hung on the piling but my line was in the water a good yard and a half from the pier. My thought is a large ray of some sort, since they can lay down in the sand and be impossible to move. He snapped a circle hook in half, whatever he was. After that the bite quieted down to just a few whiting, though it seemed others may have been catching more. All in all, a pretty good night.

ha yup ive had the same happen to me before with a small piece of shrimp, 12lb line, and medium action walleye rod and it was a giant ray that i did NOT land. bet that was excitement seeing it peel out line though.

I was very excited.

Take this for the second/third hand opinion of what “may” work… (Clinton didn’t have this many disclaimers)

When it sticks like that, reel down fairly hard and pluck the line. Just like a guitar string. I have done this twice with big rays and apparently they hate it. The will get up and run like crazy.
