Fished from the SW banks towards the GH and picked up a few dolphin, but the scattered weeds were driving the crew nuts. After boating 3 dolphin and missing a few more we started to troll towards a spot that has proved to be productive in the past. The shallow water had less weeds, but more barracuda. We tagged and released a few snakes and had a wahoo ruin the vinyl skirt on my favorite lure. Just as we entered the super secret spot, the starboard flatline started screaming and dumped half the reel. The first 45 minutes of the fight, we had no idea what we had, but we knew it was big. Finally we could see the fish and realized it was a tuna. The fish was boated with a double gaff shot, gutted and bled. Estimates put the fish at 155-160 lbs. After the battle with this monster tuna, we picked up a wahoo and had a few more short bites and cudas. Once in a lifetime fish out of Charleston made for a long and exciting day.

used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming–WOW–What a ride!!!”

Thanks to the Aggressor for letting us try to weigh the fish. The final gutted weight was 142 lbs. I’m guessing the guts would add about 15 lbs. This is the fish that Mike reffered to yesterday and 2 out of 3 “experts” say it is a bigeye tuna.
Incredible. And this is more proof that a lot of the yellowfins that we catch around here are likely bigeye. The only scientific differentiation is the liver.
Wow, that is incredible. Way to go guys, and on a 30 even better!!
I was noticing there isn’t a state record category for Atlantic Big Eye Tuna, wonder why?
