billfish on an 18 footer

My brother and I took our 18’ grady center to 135 feet the other week and caught a cuda, 4 dolphins and a sail jumped off the hook 20 yards from the boat. We didnt even need the insurance cans of gas. 60 gallons got us there and back. Thats some good fishin right there!

you mean to tell me you took that 18’ grady all the way out to 135 feet? How long did that take? Not sayin that it’s not possible but ■■■■ thats a long way out for two people in a single engine boat. Where did you go, south?

We left at 4:15 and we arrived just before 7am. We went south east from the a can out of edisto. We actually trolled to 150 ft, but the fish didnt bite past 135. we only trolled 3 hours because we ran out of bait. we wanted to go farther, but i didnt want to push the gas as well.

Geez…you are a brave soul - braver than I.

How many miles out were you?

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

43-47 miles. plan on doing it again in the near future. Just borrowed my buddys outriggers that mount in the gunwales.

Glad you had a fun and safe trip - you got balls

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

jimbo i told your brother to re-rig my outriggers so you can run 2 lines off them. ill find the clips at the house. take a pic if you do so i want to see yaulls 18 grady running 7 or 8 lines with 18 foot outriggers. You can borrow that 9.9hp motor i have for your next trip

I see single engines all the time pretty far out. If they are reliable then there’s no big deal. It is just as easy for two engines to fail you as it is for one. The key is picking your days. We were at the Edisto Banks Sunday in a 21’ with single engine and saw a couple of more guys with singles. When we left to go home, GPS said 63.87 miles to Big Bay Marina. We carry all the safety gear, and knew we wouldn’t be alone. I’m not as concerned about single engine as I am about the boat. The thing that gets me is when a 17’ bay boat shows up out there with inexperience and beer.

RDW what time did you leave out of edisto on sunday? we turned around i was wondering if yaull were the 21 we passed heading out the creek right before daylight

We were late getting started. We came down with only a few ballyhoo. The plan was to buy bait at ElChepo’s in Walterboro, they were closed:roll_eyes:. Plan B was to buy bait at the store in Edisto. They were closed and late opening. A very nice older gentleman saw us and offered a pack of bait and also 4 bags of ice:smiley: We hit the ramp around 7:15.

i dont think were gonna run 2 lines on the riggers. not enough holders for the poles.
