Charleston Harbor HMY Viking Billfish Tournament Expands Format

The success of a tournament is not something that happens by chance. There is much hard work, planning, and attention to detail, that make certain tournaments stand out in their class. The Charleston Harbor Tournament has made the strides to become the biggest billfish tournament in South Carolina in a Governors Cup series that host some great tournaments. Under the direction of veteran Governors Cup board member, Deidre Menefee (the tournaments director and partner in Tournament Management Group LLC) this tournament is poised to make even bigger strides in coming years. One big step was taken this year to create a better window of opportunity for the tournament’s participants. This year’s tournament will give anglers a 5 day window in which they can fish 3 days. Menefee hopes this will attract boats from other states to participate. The tournament is also being held in May in hopes that the weather and fish will cooperate. If all goes according to plan the field will have over 100 boats, easily making it the largest tournament in our area.

As I mentioned earlier, there is much work that goes into a successful tournament. Finding the right mix of competition, opportunities for anglers to be successful, and entertainment for the people in the tournament as well as their families and the folks that like to come down and observe the event. This year tournament should address all of these and then some. With 100 boats the competition will be as good as it gets. Holding the tournament in May a month that probably offers the best chance to catch marlin off of our coast and great entertainment every night of the tournament should make this a great tournament for anglers and observers. This year’s tournament will be held at the Charleston Harbor Hilton Marina from May 16-May 22. Here is a list of the events at this year’s tournament: I will tell you that the fighting chair competition is something you do not want to miss.
