I’ve been seeing a lot of boats anchored on the West side of the broad river bridge, there were a few there Sunday early, as the tide went slack and began heading out more boats showed up and anchored. Just curious does anyone know what they are fishing for out there?
Folks are fishing for bull reds (red drum, channel bass, redfish, spottail bass). The bite has just begun and will get better as weather cools. It’s all catch & release for the big bulls, which will be 15 to as big as 50 lbs or more, all well over the 23" maximum for legal slot fish.
If you do plan to fish for them, please use stout tackle and get the fish to the boat as quickly as possible…then release as quickly as possible, taking care to revive the fish before release. Light tackle makes for great fun, but perhaps at the expense of the fish’s health. A long fight causes lactic acid levels to spike, as well as other problems for the fish’s metabolic system.
Good luck…and by all means use non-offset circle hooks to ensure an easy release.
Yep, bull reds for sure. 2 hours before and after high is the best time.

okay. I knew them big bulls were around, caught a few good reds myself. 30 and 31 inches, i just didn’t know fishing the deep water like that could yield red fish. hmmm… learn something new everyday.
