Botany Bay Surf

Anyone surf fish at Botany Bay this time of year? I’ve recently seen some pics of some HUGE spottail a friend of a friend caught, which has me kind of fired up. Any tips for fishing botany bay? I’ve been once, and we fished the left side by the trees, but I hear the right side is better. Last time, we caught some trout and small reds, but had some huge ones break off. What works best? baits? poppin corks? I usually fish Beaufort so I don’t know too much about the area, besides the first time I was there it was hard to find good bait.

Has been over 30 years since I fished Framptons Inlet for Reds. At that time Townsend creek emptied into Framptons. Anyway - cut mullet on a bottom rig with 3oz pyramid sinker fished in the breakers at the mouth of the inlet - on the incoming tide - where the beach was cut (pools on low tide.) We caught some big ones. Seemed to be better just before sunset on a half tide. Take some substantial tackle.

I’ve fish BB several times. Always fished right at end of the path or to the left by the dead trees too. I’ve seen people with fish coming from the right. The creek that goes back to the house comes out down there a ways down. Might be a 1/2mi hike but, creek mouths are usually good. May have to go for it next time I’m down. I’d fish it like anywhere else. Carolina rig with minnow on bottom, a pop cork rig, and a casting rod with bucktail or jig tipped with a minnow.

Fishing went Ok. Had one big break off, but I did manage to catch a 5 or so pound trout. I fished the inlet, caught a few blues, whiting, and stingray…no spottail. I had much beter luck fishing the trees on the left side last time.
