Bottom fishing 8-20-11

First trip out in my new Regulator and it was a blast. Dropped the boat in at the ball park in Georgetown Friday and left it at the boat shed for the weekend. Between the weather reports being off all week and there only being 3 of us we made the call to bottom fish instead of troll.

Left out around 6:30 and headed out to 95’ at around 34 MPH the entire ride. Stopped at our first spot and had fish coming in the boat from the start. Many throw back BSB’s and some keepers too. Small B-liners and some keepers. The spot wasn’t producing the size we wanted so we headed to another spot. Second spot produced plenty of fish too, some keepers some not. One nice endangered Red Snapper that we have to throw back now for some reason or another:frowning_face: and some good keeper BSB’s. Then a buddy of mine gets a big hit coming up from the bottom…shark on? After quite the little fight we see about a 50 - 60 lb reef donkey surface with his partner in crime tagging along. A lot of sweat for nothing:smiley:.

Now it gets fun…we decide to move to spot 3 for the day and on the way we started to notice some grass in about 110’. Not much but low and behold it leads to a 5 gallon bucket that appears to have been at sea for awhile. We move in for a closer look and spot a dolphin immediately…toss in some squid and the fun begins. We stayed on them for quite awhile and tossed back a lot of slingers and kept some fish for tacos.

After awhile we got bored and knew we had fish and a boat to clean so we headed to the hill around 3:00 PM. Ran in at 37 MPH all the way to the bay and then hammered it down some more heading up to the boat shed as it appeared something was brewing but it fizzled out.

All in all it was a great day and a lot of fun for the first trip out on Miss Ella Pearl. I now know why I bought a Regulator too…man I love this boat:smiley: Made it home Sunday in time to get the boat back in the lake and on the lift and fry up some BSB’s and B-liners. Then for breakfast some B-liners and grits. Didn’t ge

Since we didn’t head out far enought to troll it wasn’t so bad. The AP is about the only electronics it’s short of and will be added. Have to let the better half calm down on how much I’ve already spent this year:smiley:

That’s a great ride. I’ve been drooling over the 26. However, I am in a “need to sell 1 or 2 boat situation” before purchasing another. Regulator is at the top of my list.

Got an open array too? I HEAR YA man! Let me know when she gives you the green light on the AP. I sold mine but I know a fella that can hook you up.

I’m thankful the first owner did not compromise on the electronics:smiley:. Will let you know when it’s AP time. Let me know when you are heading back to fish. I know I will be back in G’town at least once in Sept.

That’s a sweet ride!

Pretty boat.

Is that a big raymarine unit in the dash? Looks like it is set up in a different type of recess and cover setup there. Open array and twin M504’s it looks like also. Very nice. What transducer(s) are on it?

Please post more pics when you have time.

Thanks Phin. It took the sale of 2 boats and a lot of sweet talking to convince my wife we needed this boat .

It has a 12" Northstar 6000i with open Array radar, Furuno RD30, Twin Standard Horizon GX1280S VHF’s and 2 thru hull ducers (1 big airmar and the other I can’t recall). I plan to add AP and a small Garmin unit as back up with XM weather. Right now I need to fish it some more and see what my best set is for trolling. We had so much fun bottom fishing last weekend that I can see a lot more of that in my future too. I definitely need to order some bottom rigs from you when I get a chance.

I really have not taken many pics and most of them are of the boat in the old owners boat house. I went to North Carolina, Louisiana and Virginia looking at Regulators and this was by far the best one on the market. I bought it the day before it was supposed to hit Yacht trader, thank you craigslist

Here are a few pics I have taken

The other ducer is probably the 233khz one for the RD30.

The 6000i is awesome. I believe Courtland has that unit if I remember correctly from pics he has posted.

Sure hate hearing how there will be no Lowrance HDS or Simrad stuff on your rig, but what can I do?

:stuck_out_tongue::clown_face:

I’d be happy to trade you bottom rigs for a ride one day. Your boat is as good as money in the bank.

I’m almost positive you are correct on the other ducer. The AP will definitely be Simrad if I buy it new which I likely will. I’m not opposed to the lowrance HDS either as long as it is a small unit that will flush mount below the RD30 (about 7" X 7" space left) and can utilize XM/Sirrius weather. I don’t know much about Lowrance but did have one on my triton duck/fishing/gigging boat that I sold because I never used.

You are welcome to fish with me anytime. I am far from an expert and always willing to learn. I have been an avid boater and outdoorsman my entire life and always knew I would get more into the offshore thing when I could afford to…if that is possible. I have always had one rule in life…I must live on navigable water:smiley:

The smallest Lowrance HDS should squeeze into that spot. I think I got my WX/radio module for $100 bucks on sale also. Very convenient to control the stereo from the HDS unit rather than reaching up to where my stereo is mounted. Most use a remote to solve that problem, but you get a remote operating point for sirius radio in the HDS when you get the weather module.

Longer term, you may want to think about leaving the dash as clean as you can and going with a big Simrad to replace the 6000i. The 6000i isn’t out of date by any means, but going to one of the newer multifunction units can have your sirius wx, radio, radar, AP, plotter, sonar, engine monitoring, fuel flow, + lots more all combined into one system. Less different stuff to break, and less separate units to monitor. Everything networked together does have that drawback of not having redundancy if the central unit fails, but everything sure is a lot more efficient to operate IMO.
