started in 120’, worked out to the big ledge on SWB 155’-188’
You go to that spot I showed you?
Be there or be on the Short Bus!!
He took the bait like a bonnethead on a day old crab…

Scamp are like BSB. They are everywhere. Artificial reefs, hard bottom, soft bottom, live bottom, dead bottom, half-alive bottom, shell, gravel, sand, and even under floating wood.
Most of the time, I ask silly questions but its just because I am trying to learn a thing or two.
So now I ask ya, tell me more on this indicator species thang.
Can you name as many as you know and the typical indications of each.
Thanks Skinnee:smiley:
I plan to copy and paste to a sticker so I can put on my helm and on my PC diplay, so please be accurate.
I dont know diddly on Bottom fishing…yet.
By the way Jason, I thought you was going to call me and take me for a lesson or three.
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good but I wanna see it.
Lights On!
I know I am on Good live bottom. I like to see ringtails, they are always around big Gagg grouper…And I have no idea why?
Sand perch
Bank Seabass
Kelp Bass
Lizard fish
These tell you that you need to try again. Sometimes it is only 20-30’, but it makes a big difference in filling the boxes, and only catching an “Edisto Fisher Slam”. Anchoring is an art, and it takes lots of practice to get it right.

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
I got ya loud and clear Paul. I went and spent my allowance on MM anchor and Buoy yesterday.
I am going to fashion some marker buoys in the next day or so. Any suggestions on cheap home made marker buoys?

Haven't been in a while myself. Keep in touch with me on email. I'll probably start fishing again in Charleston around Sept 1 or so or maybe the week before. Drop me an email around that time so I don't forget about you.
Sellsfish and skinneeJ, I think this indicator species thing is a much better tool than a high dollar sonar. I mean… why would you want to try and “guess” at what was on the sonar screen when you could drop some squid on a chicken rig and drift over the spot a few times? So anyhow, what exactly does an atlantic scampnose indicate? Thx.

You win Phin. You are the bottom master. I don't even have a sonar on my boat. Paul lowers a long string with a lead weight on the end to let me know if the bottom is hard or soft. Sometimes he brings up a little piece of the reef on it. That's when we get really excited that we found the spot.
And atlantic scampnose means that you are standing right next to Edisto Fisher.
I can’t wait until your sonar picture book comes out. You really could make hundreds of thousands of dollars off of it. If it got published, I would be the first one to buy a copy!!!

I wasn’t serious. I know I’m next to EF if a scampnose is properly called and landed.
Not sure. I had a couple smithwicks and played some trivia. Seemed pretty cool to me…
Just kidding. I may have blam*ed it. May not have. We’ll have to see in October. There isn’t much more I could have done, and the what more I could have done is stuff I know only from having gone through it! I gave up fishing in July for the thing, so when I go fishing next week it will be epic.
