They are indeed. I’ve known them here in the south for many years as the Sea Wasp.

broad group of critters, probably the one in link above. plenty of hot jelly out there lately, got some in the lips while throwing the cast net in big water last week. glad our cubozoans aren’t life threatening though!

In your learned opinion, could Pacific box jellies/offspring survive in bilge water of ships from the areas infected and be a vector for introducing that species here???

Well i looked through our jelly fish list and i have seen all the jellies listed this year. The closet resemblance is to the box jelly i saw was an Australian box jelly, probably not one it just looked that way. I am very confident it was not the one you pictured. The one i Saw was about a 4 to 8 inch body and almost 2 ft tenacles and a lot of them. When i reel in my shark lines my arms get covered in jelly stings. Ive got a buddys whole body once with cast net spray from a moon jelly.

I don’t have one, I just googled “scdnr jellyfish”… but pacific jellyfish bilge water does sound like something I’d personally try to stay away from

The marine biologist that identified the iron absorbing creatures in the gulf stream and planner of dog parties may not be able to avoid that bilge water if enough of it is dumped off Savannah/Charleston…the lionfish seem to be flourishing up here. Very small world these days.

Don’t know what kind of jellies these are but I found them washed up all over n folly the other day when I walked along the beach.

Sea wasp i think but not the one i saw. The one i saw makes that look welcoming.

From the entrance down to the first set of rocks there was around 30 washed up. Most of them were still alive. All different sizes but same species. I did a lot of research as I have never seen this type before. I’m pretty sure there box jellyfish. There tentycals can retract up into their bodies or become like 9ft long. I almost stepped on a few walking.

The box jelly here is not like the Australian version. They sting but are not dangerous to most people. The Portuguese Man of War is much more dangerous .

One of you guys probably saw a man of war. Did it look like a floating plastic Dasani bottle.

I saw the box jellies at folly a few days ago. Quite a few of them, the large mullet were eating them and picking them apart.
