Boykin spaniel

Looking for a Boykin puppy or preferably a 1-2 year old started dog. Male or female - I don’t have a preference. Please let me know if anyone knows about any litters or dogs for sale. Thanks

Dear Screamin’…I’ve owned Boykin’s for over 30 years, and I’m not sure that I’ll get my next one in South Carolina. I’ve been generally disappointed in the quality of the breed over the last 15 years. Unfortunately popularity has a negative effect on dog breeds. Not to mention the decision to advance the recognition of the Boykin by the AKC, and breeding dogs for the show bench, and converting the breed to an upland dog. I’m going to start looking in Texas and Arkansas where the purity of the retrieving hunting heritage has been emphasized, and the breed is mostly known only to dove and duck hunters.
If you’re looking for a pet, Poly’s suggestion of the Boykin Spaniel Society is the best place to start. They require hip, eye, and heart testing for all registrations, and they have regular reports on dog litters and breeders.

Reckon I’m nearing 30 years of ownership, as my current Boykin is 6,and I’m on my third dog. All Boykins have a retrieving instinct, some better than others. There are still plenty of great dogs coming from our state, you have to know where to look.

As with any dog they have to be trained,I’ve trained all of mine and have had excellent results. Some rely on schools, but the trainer at that school doesn’t come home with the dog.I would say Boykins are the complete state dog,as they are great retrievers of doves and summer ducks.

We used to have a black boykin growing up, believe it or not. That was over 30 yrs ago.

Check out Just Ducky Kennels.

Not trying to be a smart azz, but if you want a started dog obviously you’re going to work it. Why not get a Lab? The best hunting Boykins I’ve ever hunted around couldn’t keep up with a decent run of the mill Lab. We were in Iowa one time pheasant hunting and a guy joined us with two state champion Boykins. They were a joke compared to our good Labs

we sent a friends Lab across the pocotaligo river to retrieve a dead deer-he did it no problem. try that with a boykin

probably wouldn't work worth a s h I t, about the same as a lab in the dovefield on opening day.

I haven’t met a Lab yet that could keep up with my Llewellin Setters and English pointers or my buddy’s German Shorthairs in the field. I’ve hunted over several of them in Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas and our Upland dogs run them into the ground. They are retrieving SOB’s though.

Setters are definitely light on their feet, pointers have great stamina too. We used to take english setters and labs to Nebraska every year for 10 - 14 days. My lab would be the only dog that was able to go the entire time. Most peoples labs are housedogs and would last a day, maybe two tops, then wouldn’t get out of the truck. My buddy would usually bring 4 setters and he would rotate them and they would last until their pads got sore or torn up, then have to shelve them. My lab was the only dog that would last 10+ days of daylight to dark field hunting. She was crazy. Birdiest dog anyone had ever seen.

We only hunted pure wild birds and they didn’t hold well at all. It would drive the pointing dogs nuts. We would kill more birds over my lab than any of the other dogs.

I hunted my female black lab for 12 years. Every year I owned her we shot morning and afternoon on opening saturday. I guess since the statute of limitations has passed it’s ok to say, but we typically didn’t stop at a dozen, or two dozen, or… Plus, I’d always do blind retrieves with her on the way out of the field for people who had birds they couldn’t find.

I had a kind of unique environment to train her and keep her in shape, and honest to god, I never saw her quit.

I agree that a lab can be a very well behaved gundog - But while I’ve seen many well behaved labs I’ve also seen just as many labs that are anything but well behaved. I’m not saying that all boykins are born state champions but they definitely are easier to train.

Says who, and why would you say that?
You more interested in a lap dog or hunting dog?
I would differ 180 degrees. You’re much more likely to get an inbred Boykin than you are an inbred Lab

the “guide” that no longer hunts, or owns a hunting dog is now a gun dog specialist? get over yourself dude, the man wants a Boykin.

screamingdrag, good luck in finding what you’re looking for,I will send a PM if I happen to find something.

the “guide” that no longer hunts - you say that like its a bad thing?

Granted I’m not a dog specialist like you are and haven’t earned the right to tell people to get over themselves". All I did was offer some of what I know, based on my own experiences. I suppose if people weren’t interested in others opinions and experiences, they wouldn’t ask questions on here. Sorry if I offended you

Far from offending me,screamingdrag asked for the 411 on a 1-2 yr old Boykin, and you come in here with one example of Boykins not performing in Iowa. If he wanted a Lab he would have specified, and I never would have mentioned anything.

Has anyone ever posted asked a question about Goodyear Tires, and people respond about their Michelins, Cooper’s, and Hankooks?

Have you ever seen that on here?

Do you scold them too?
