Braid Knots?

Well I put it off for years but, finally plan to made a go at it. It’s the only way I know to have the strength and cast distance at same time. I already know to hand flip the bail and that it can/will lay your hand open. Only part I hate is I for sure will have to have my cheaters when I fish with it for the knots. I still remember first time I tried to tie braid in a good breeze with that limp line.:imp:

I’ve got a 3000 Penn and I plan to add about 100 yds 30# PowerPro on to my 17# Suffix mono backing. What is the best knots for braid to mono/fluro for joining lines or leaders. Also if I tie direct from braid to jig or rig what is best. I also guess I will be using clippers to cut it? Plan to see how I like it and maybe try some more.

I’m just starting to use some braid too. Hopefully you’ll get some replies from others with more experience than me. From what I’ve read you might try a double uni knot for joining the different lines. When I tie direct to a bait with either braid or fluorocarbon I use a San Diego knot. Wet the fluorocarbon before pulling the San Diego knot tight and be sure the line doesn’t overwrap itself. I mainly use the braid for the lack of stretch, hoping to get better hooksets on long casts.

Uni to uni will work. If you want a near 100% strength knot its best to double your braid with a bimini twist or a spider hitch. Saw a nice easy knot on YouTube the other day. Haven’t fished it yet But here it is the Aussie Quickie:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eiZJCM2-jI

X2…Uni to uni, the double uniknot, works great for joining mono to braid, braid to braid, and mono to mono. They are very small and very strong knots–pull it tight and trim the tags. It helps if you mosten the line for this knot and most other knots right before tightening it down.

I use a palomar knot for braid on my terminal tackle. Another trick for braid is this: After you have used the braid for a long time, the braid will start to wear out. Instead of cutting all the braid off the reel and replacing it, just reel it backwards off the current reel and onto a new reel. The braid at in the middle and end of the spool is hardly ever used and for the most part is still brand new. So, just reel it off of one reel and onto another one…presto, new braid to fish with, and you saved some dollars.

Double uni for the mono braid connection - palomar for everything else.

Once you jig with braid, you will wonder how you ever caught a fish with mono… mono feels like a rubberband to me now.

30# on a Penn 3000 is overkill - the drag can’t handle that much line. And in my experience, 30# on Penn Battles = wind knots. I have mine spooled with 200+/- yards of 15#.

Uni, Albright, Crazy Alberto. That Aussie looks good too.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I just use the Albright pretty easy knot to tie. I have landed everything from Tarpon to Reds using it, with no failures. IMO it is best to pick a few knots and get good at them.

Uni knot for braid to swivel. Uni knot for leader to swivel and snell on the hook. Always start with the hook first since its a snell. you cant go wrong with this, have never lost one due to the knot.

Second…or third on the Albright. Dirt simple for a braid to flouro connection aand has not failed me yet.

My vision and dexterity are not what they once were. I cannot tie a double uni in the wind, and have changed permanently to Alberto. If terminal tackle is hook or jighead or swivel…Polamar knot. If tying to something with treble hooks such as a Spook, single uni. Alberto, single Uni, Polamar and Rapala loop knot are what I can tie successfully on the water, with braid involved.Braid diameter is small and it is very limp…hard to tie in the wind.

As far as I’m concerned braid sucks. I switched to it a few years ago and have nothing but contempt for it now. The fish that I don’t land because of mono are worth it to me vs. the frustration of trying to tie knots in a moderate breeze, and I’m going to spend my time off the water doing a hundred other things than sitting in my shed tying rigs with a magnifying glass. I’ve wasted more time tying knots with sweat dripping in my eyes behind my reading glasses with braid than I care to remember. How many fish did I miss during the 45 minutes of a good bite messing with that infernal thread? I can tie mono with my eyes closed, let alone need reading glasses, and be casting to the next fish in no time. When I hang up with mono I bust it off and keep fishing. With braid I dang near cut my fingers off trying to break it before I snap a rod blank. I don’t drop shot through a weed mat to catch inshore saltwater fish, or cast 75 yards to a school of bonefish in the Wando River, or freespool 200 ft. down for a decent flounder. I can tie an improved clinch knot on either end of mono, to a swivel, a lure, or a hook, and I’m good to go. I don’t need a Smart Phone with a knot tying app to keep up with all the mumbo jumbo knots for braided line either. I’m not spending $4.00 a gallon for gas to go out and earn a merit badge for knot tying, I’m going to feel that tug, and catch a few fish. Mono forever!

In response to Mister Bossdog’s comment, I have a buddy who does exactly the same thing. He has six rods and reels, every one the same. All are spooled with ten pound mono. If he hangs up,he makes no attempt to get loose. He immediately breaks it off and reties. If line gets low, he switches to the next rod. He has fished this way inshore for 40 years and been very successful. He has practically no lost fishing time with tying complicated knots. Every rod is the same, so there is no remobilization time when he switches rods.

^^^^^ Some of these are hilarious!! thanks!

Dear Grill…“How many fish did I miss during the 45 minutes of a good bite…” Your interpretation of that sentence indicates a level of reading skills that begs for improvement. Or is it your intention to attempt humor? If so, Ha Ha…your almost funny.

Man, I thought I was bad with knots.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.

you got to practice until knot tying becomes as natural as casting. Being able to re rig in just a few seconds is game changing when on the water.

Sorry,

Your rant had me confused.

Note to self to be careful not to loose any fingers today fishing with braid.

Never realized how much danger there was inshore.
