Braid or Mono

Which do you prefer in the surf and why. I have likes and dislikes about both. Just wanted some other opinions before I put new line on.

I prefer power pro because of its sensitivity and added line capacity. A reel that will hold 300 yards of 30 mono will hold twice that filled with power pro. A negative of power pro in the surf is the sand wears it down. You’ll need to change it out when it starts looking fuzzy. The only thing I like about mono is its cheap.

All my rods have JB hollow core braid with a mono top shot. Best of both worlds, strength of braid when I need it, flexibility and abrasion resistance with the mono. Plus, getting cut off isn’t nearly as expensive!

I have been using Berkeley big game 15# mono in the surf for many seasons. On my “bigger” set-ups 25# Andes mono. The big game line holds up REALLY well. I’ve tried braid, and it gets rubbed up pretty bad. Sometimes I can find the Berkeley on sale, 2000yrds for $10. Most trips I’ll have 4-6 rods. If I’ve gotta respool them a couple times a season for fraying anyway? I’ll stick with the mono, at maybe a penny a foot, about $.75 for a 250yrd spool.

braid for the little double drop rigs with shrimp. 20-25lb mono of your choice for the bigger spinners with redfish/shark baits out.

just preference they both work fine and i swap back and forth depending on which reels are rigged for what since i dont have dedicated surf reels just ones that i swap from inshore or offshore applications onto surf rods. good luck!
