As this winter continues to drag on, spring fever has reached an all time high in my household. For those of us that love top-water fishing, spring time means the beginning of top-water fishing for the season and some of the most spectacular explosions as fish wake up from their winter slumber. The creeks and rivers begin to fill up with live bait and the fish are ready to eat.
Spring also provides some of the most beautiful scenery and some really calm pretty mornings. There is nothing quite like casting a top-water plug into a sheet of glass and watching the ripples from the plug spread out farther and farther, only to have the sheet of glass shattered by a big hungry trout or redfish.
For those that have never tried to catch fish on top-water, there is really no secret to it. The fish will be found in the places you typically find them. Vary your retrieve speed until you find out what the fish prefer. Don’t be afraid to let the lure rest during retrieve. Many times the fish will hit when the lure is sitting still.
I have to end this article with a warning. Top-water fishing can be addictive and can cause you to lose sleep as you get up earlier and earlier to catch a few more fish before the sun comes up.
