Anyone familiar with this boat launch? Is it safe for overnight parking? How far of a run is it to the northern tip /ocean at Hilton Head? Any launching issuesthere? Looking at staying in a motel somewhere near there, ( Beaufort area, i guess), and fishing the outer reaches of Port Royal sound near the ocean for sharks. Any help, greatly appreciated.
Are you talking the ramp at 170 bridge???

Yes, that’s it.
Saw a Days inn in port royal. One guy posted that he takes his boat there. Looking to park my 20’ KW there as well. Wondering how safe the area is for your stuff.
You could also put in at the Sands, Battery Creek, and Lemon Island. Not sure about overnight parking. I would back my trailer up to something, so no one could take it. You have a very narrow, channel to stay in at low tide at the 170 bridge.
I myself use Lemon Island, and is pretty much a straight shot to the North end, just look at a chart.
I would also use Lemon Island on the Chechessie. It’s a good double ramp, plenty of parking and well lit. Not many scalawags around and the police patrol it regularly. Quick run up to Hilton Head and you can avoid crossing and running down a lot of Broad River, which can get pretty snotty sometimes.

+1 on Lemon Island ramp. That’s where I put in more often than anywhere else. Never had a problem w/ theft or anything there.
There’s also a good ramp on Pinckney Island that is probably closer to where you are heading.
Larry’s not kidding about the Broad River. It can be pretty rough with a little wind.
Highway patrol frequently sit in the Lemon Island ramp parking lot. Gives them a good angle on the traffic flow. More often, the better.
X2 on what seaox said about narrow channel on low tide , not only narrow but at dead low barely enough depth to cross also , really need to try and time launch/load during mid to high tide , lots of boats have had to wait out the tide,!! And yes the Broad does get nasty with not much wind from nw or se…

I like the sands boat landing an I think it is pretty safe there over night. Not a bad run from there to the sound also

Thanks, fellas, for all the replies. Going to try it out very soon.
There’s a cut-through (Rose Island Cut) between Chechessee and Broad Rivers just below Rose Island. Also, you don’t need to go to the mouth of the Sound to find sharks.
The mouth of Chechessee Creek just below the Lemon Island Landing holds sharks. I have seen a few tarpon jump there. The Chechessee, Colleton, and Broad Rivers are full of deep holes that are full of sharks. The Rose Island Cut has some deep water with lots of smaller sharks.
I have caught some big sharks at the “Cobia Hole”. This is an area of deep water near 18.974-43.784 in the Broad off the bottom end of Daws Island. This and other “fishing holes” are shown on the Top Spot N233 map.
I suppose the farther out you go, the better your chance for a “monster”. Good luck!

Thanks. Yeah, the sharks we generally fish for are 10+ footers.

I normally stay at the Days Inn in Port Royal. It’s not the nicest, but good enough for a fishing trip. It is also close to Last Chance Bait & Tackle and a decent boat ramp by the boardwalk. I’ve never had a problem here.

Also, if you look up at the light poles by 170 you will see traffic cameras that cover the entire boat landing. SCDOT,SCHP dispatch and BCemd have a constant feed on the cameras.

You do know Mary Lee pinged off Morgan Island? She’s a bit bigger than 10’
What everyone said on Lemon Island. Last time son and I put in at Broad river bridge we had to trim up hop out and pull boat across 10yards of sand. It was dead low, but we were also in a skiff drafting very little water. Just past the grass. Channel is still there close to the landing. If you choose to use that landing pick mid tide and higher.

Yes, X2. It used to be terrible. They supposedly improved it about 2 years ago, but it still isn’t very good. Better to drive 2 more miles south, cross the Broad river bridge, then the Cheessie bridge, boat ramp is on the left but the exit for it is on the right just over the second bridge. Deep water at all tides and there are police and DNR there more often than not. No question to me which one to use. Unless you’re doing something illegal:face_with_head_bandage:

The feed is also put on public TV, so the next time you are in the parking lot and decide to scratch your ass or pick your nose…
