This weather has given our crew an awful case of cabin fever, and with an old buddy from the Corps in town, we decided to try it. Catching bait was a challenge, but we did sabiki up some at the tire reef. Caught a couple of nice BSBs that were close enough. Decided to run down the beach and saw some birds picking hard on what looked like glass minnows. We slowed down for a bit, and saw a huge ray, but no brownie underneath. Oh well, came back to the inside and anchored up on some numbers over near HHI in the sound. Three chum bags down, and some live bait on top, and cut on the bottom and we started to enjoy ourselves on the water. Caught two big drum, and ended the day with a short ling fish!! (water temp never above 65). The cobia could not have been more than 12 lbs, but we let him go in hopes of catching him next year. Fish ate dead shad on the bottom rig near the chum bag off the bow. Great day on the water. HOORAH!!
So much for the 2 week rule! Congrats OldSchool on being the cherry popper this year! I never heard of a Cobia of any size in the Sound this early!

Being on the water is a blessing, catching fish is a bonus!

That is early for the Cobia . This might be a good year .
I DONT HAVE A BOAT
BUT LOVE TO FISH> HINT
You aren’t supposed to tell people that. You should wait at least a month before reporting the first cobia catch, or it’s a party foul Cobia aren’t in the Broad River in March.
I’ve caught them in March for the last several years, but there ain’t none there until June. I’ve usually got all I want before the crowd shows up in May.

i am just glad to see some bait showing up. Weather looks crappy Saturday but Sunday should be a go!
All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.

Mine are just starting to get swollen buds… Bradford pear, plum, and maples are all I have blooming… so there should be no cobia.
Congrats, OldSchool, and thank you for your service.

Good report, and also good news on the bait. What size Shad? And what area did you find them in as far as depth, etc.
I f not too much imposing, what type of structure, depth, etc for the Cobia?
Any info appreciated, pm if you prefer.

Oldschool has done it again!! you must have the proverbial horseshoe!! I would like to petition you to put on a Cobia seminar so we can all learn your tricks of catching pre-migratory ling fish in the broad river. How do you do it? that must be one hell of a crew you have fishing with you…keep up the awesome work and by all means let us know when the next one falls victim to the ol Scotty Craft…some pics will make us all feel even less worthy to ply the same waters as the local legend?have you ever thought about getting into the charter business?

Captain, pre-migratory??? Apparently not. Based on Old School’s and others’ reports that I’ve heard, the migration is in full swing. If you’re not fishing this week, you are going to miss some of the best fishing of the season.

Yep, just getting good now. Should be on fire by Thursday or Friday.

Fished the PRS for a few hours on Sunday. Water temp barely cracked 60. I didn’t mark much bait. I did see some big mullet back in the creeks for the first time this year, so that is a good sign. No cobia or shark hookups, so while there may be a Cobia or two around, the numbers are not there yet.
All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.
The next full moon should really turn them on.

Might have been a juvie that was spawned at Waddell and released in Broad River.
