a buddy and i tried gigging last night in some water off the broad. not bad conditions except for the very coffee colored water. didnt look muddy or anything…is this from the rain? if so how long would one expect it to take until it clears up? thanks!
I don’t have an answer for ya but I have noticed the brown water pretty much all season…its odd looking really…It looks brackish almost…We noticed it during Cobia season and it stayed brown the whole way through

The heavy rainfall has flushed much of the tannic-colored water out of the swamps into our estuaries. Salinity is down due to the influx of fresh water. The Broad is not nearly as affected as St. Helena Sound, as St. Helena has 3 freshwater rivers dumping into it. I was in front of Morgan (Monkey) Island yesterday and way out there at high tide the water was very brown. However, I was in the mouth of the Broad near PI, Lands End and HHI and the water was nice and green.
I live on the May River in Bluffton, and it is brown and brackish. This condition will probably be around for a while.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed the change as I went up the broad above the bridge. It changed over about 4 miles up. It was interesting as it did not appear to be cloudy as mud would make it. I wasn’t sure what it was, but I made sure my engine got a GOOD flush that evening.

thanks for the info guys. guess we will be sticking to the beaufort river side as the water seems to be clearer.
