Went to Shem to get some bait. Was hoping for a ray, just not THIS ray. Man, what a beast. 45 minute fight - was ripping line on an almost locked down Spinfisher 8500. Then of course, he sticks to the bottom at the floating dock. Reached over to grab the line, well because my arms were jello at this point, and the tip of my Shimano Trevala snapped off. sigh
At least I have a warranty.
A trick with stingrays that are “stuck to the bottom” is to get the line as tight as you can and the start strumming it like a guitar string, the vibrations spook the ray and it usually comes up.
Word on the street is that Shimano is doing away with the lifetime warranty deal for fishing rods.
As my Trevalas start to get phased out, I’m going to be phasing in Star Paraflexes. Great rods, a little pricier but tough as hell. Plus Haddrell’s always treats people right with the Star rod warranty.
I high stick the **** out of the custom jigger I build, haven’t broken it yet! Jiggers are intended to handle stupid high angles. So I disagree that any blank will break on high stick, that rod should not have broke, either its a factory defect, or it shouldn’t be rated as a 100# jigger. I did duck and cringe the first time I sturmed a ray off the bottom with it though…
The trevala is a low end jigging rod. Blank is not much different from other cheaper jigging rods. It may say it’s rated for 100+ but I promise that rod is not capable. You get what you pay for. I have seen custom rods bend down to the reel seat and hold true even when high sticker against insane amount of drag, but those rods are well over 400-500$ range
