It’s a tough crowd for sure. Gotta have thick skin. Internet conversations are rough. We all need a common enemy, lets focus our anger and energy on being allowed to fish. Everyone is without a doubt going to have different views. But our one common interest is, we want to fish.

I’ve got no dog in this show, but I know I have dumped more undersized BSB over board than I could count. I would dare say in 100+’ maybe 20% survive 60’ + water I would be surprised if 50% survived. In 30-50’ I’d say if they weren’t gut hooked 90% make it. Now that is no scientific statement but a personal SWAG.
Nature boy… I sure hope there is no one out there making laws on hear say from a public internet forum. But I guess that would follow with our current law makers and government.
Making law from internet hearsay?? Cupka himself said that part of the BSB survey was gathered by random household ph calls!! With this council good science & data are meaningless. Its all about following the adjenda. Being like California! If we could get rid of Cupka and Greg Waugh things might improve. Cupka is looking quite elderly! Cross your fingers.
Skineej, I’d really like to bury the hatchet with you. Internet conversations are hard, we can’t relay our facial expressions, tone of voice, body language and all the other tells that go into real communication.
When you get back to Charleston, please give me a call. Larry Teuton, 912-655-5674, or shoot me an email LTeuton at aol dot comm. I’ll come up there and meet you, I’ll buy the dinner and you the drinks, or vice versus, doesn’t matter to me. We’ll sit across the table and look each other in the eyes and have a conversation, and if after that you still want to throw the big boy at me, go ahead and jump like a frog:smiley:
I’m not here for argument, just good discussion and sharing information.

Now that looks a lot more like a friendly invitation. Way different than your original. I am not a grudge holder. Honestly, I don't care that much. I'm back in Charleston in 3 weeks so when you are in town drop by and I will definitely buy you a beer. No hard feelings on my part.
BTW, you’ve never posted your name that I have seen Be good to know who I was talking to.

I don't post my real name on the website because people take things too personal and then try to bring your job into it. Kind of like when you mentioned my previous employer. I actually quit BTW. I'm definitely not anonymous though. I've probably met 200+ people on this website and probably have actually fished with 80-100 of them.
Even so, it is what it is, and accurate information is necessary to make good rules. Without the truth how can anyone make good common sense decisions? If telling the truth hurts us, we are in worse trouble than I feared.
You already said that it was your "guess". It's not the "truth" or "accurate" unless you actually keep some firm records. Until then it's just a guess. Again, my intent was not to call you a liar, but just point out that your guess might not be accurate at all and if it is not, then it's not the type of information that we want submitted as the "truth".

Wow, you get that may gut hooks using circle hooks?
Of course they use “hearsay”. Have you every talked to these guys? When you argue the numbers they actually say “many fisherman are reporting high numbers of discard mortality”… Where do you think these “reports” come from? You aren’t calling report hotline are you?
And there is no way that you are seeing 80% mortality in 100’… I am willing to place a hefty wager that you can’t prove that.
Wow, you get that may gut hooks using circle hooks?
Being honest, I have not fished for BSB with circle hooks. Last off shore has been for swords and some trolling. But this is the gospel. I have had more gut hooked reds with circle hooks than I ever had with J’s. I have had less misses, but way more gut hooks. This is on the bottom not under a cork mind you. I’ve been using circle hooks for awhile under a cork I just had to re-learn not to set the hook.
That said you are assuming my guess at my mortality rate is from gut hooks. It’s mostly because I don’t vent them and after throwing back a bunch seeing them taken by predators. If we’re catching some Snapper in between a horde of BSB, we’re not moving if anchored.

Well, I wasn't really assuming anything. You said that your mortality rates would be 90% if you didn't have so many gut hooked fish.
We rarely vent fish, and the only time we catch hoards of tiny BSB is trying to sabiki bait. Where in the heck are you guys fishing? The little 6 inch BSB’s probably are one of the most fragile out there, but 80% mortality is WAY TOO HIGH… When bottom fishing, we pretty much always sabiki in 80-100’ and I still don’t think our mortality rates are 10%.
Everyone needs to understand that the SAFMC is allocating over one MILLION pounds of our quotas for bottomfish in the South Atlantic to dead discards. Refusing to address this waste of seafood and/or quota passively supports it. It does not matter if the discard mortality rates are real or perceived, they are what the council is using. This is the reality we must deal with. The only real way to get some of those fish/quota back is by offering positive solutions like aligning opening dates for co-occurring species. We must also realize that some fishery managers and environmentalists will use/create a problem like regulatory discards to advance an agenda like area closures.
natureboy, I have heard VMS would not pass, but you are right about them saying one thing and doing another. If we stop it, we need to take it as a sign they are finally listening to us and work with them on the Visioning Project. I hope everyone on here will join me in a discussion about positive solutions most open-minded people can support and stand united in our call for the council to implement them.
Freefish7 : I know its very close. The actions of the SC legislature has been a big help BUT some voting members in the past have said one thing to keep us quiet and then voted with the enviros. I know the other side will keep the pressure on - and we should too. The margin is too close
