Cracker Larry, think back to your last bottom fishing trip. How many fish do you know for a fact died because of "discards"?
On my last bottom fishing trip, which I gave an honest answer and was called a liar for replying, the only species open was red grouper. We were fishing in 100’ of water and caught 200 sea bass, 50 red snapper, 20 gag grouper and a lot of short red grouper to reach our limit of legal red grouper. This means we released 300 fish to keep 12. Even at a 10% mortality we killed 42 fish to get legal limit in the boat. The mortality was much higher than 10%, and yes computer man, we moved a dozen times. Thanks for that advice, never would have thought of that myself.
I don’t have to know for a fact how many of them died. Some flop on the surface and a sea bird eats them, some the cudas and sharks get, there isn’t any way to know how many the amberjack, cobia and goliaths eat in the deeper depths, but I’m sure we are loosing a lot of fish.
If all the species opened and closed at the same time there would be a lot less waste. I’m dang sure of that.

??? You lost me on this one. First, when is Red Grouper open and not scamp and gag? All three are open at the same time. You want me to believe that you boated 50 Red Snappers (not B-liners) and 20 Gags on the same day??? you are either the greatest bottom fisherman of all time, or lucky as hel

Sells, that last trip I referred to was in the GOM, I regularly fish out of Hudson Beach, FL. And yes, red grouper were the only species open.
And yeah, I am pretty good at bottom fishing
Only been doing it 50 years. Ain’t good for much else except building boats

20 gags in one day would be rather impressive, but to throw in 50 ARS is something I have only seen in the GOM.
Really [:0] This picture was taken at Savannah Bend Marina, Savannah, GA. Count the gags
The pile in the back is 2 wheel barrow loads of sea bass and beeliners.
Just another day on a charter boat.

You calling me a liar too? I know you have a lot of experience and seniority on here, but there are a lot of other people who know something about how to catch fish

take it easy old man…
You never said GOM in your first post thus the question. 50 ARS in the GOM is very believable…you need to lay off the Testosterone shots.

Skinneej, I’ve been offshore fishing for over 50 years, and 30 years as a commercial and charter boat captain. I really don’t appreciate being called a liar by a keyboard expert microsoft technician weekend fisherman, or told to stay home. I think you’ve been in Miami too long and forgot your manners. How about we take up this discussion in person and you call me a liar to my face? I don’t waste time arguing with jerks on the Internet.
I never called you a liar. I implied that you were using a statistical outlier as an example which does not paint a clear picture of the average trip. I said it wasn't the "norm". Are you denying that?
Secondly, for those that know me, they know that I would say the same to your face, and there wouldn’t be much you could do about it. You wouldn’t threaten me in person.
Nice catch by the way.

No doubt. It would be nice to see the actual numbers. We might all be surprised as to how low the actual values really are. I don't usually bottom fish in the dog days of summer either, so we don't have as many cuda encounters. Before they closed recreational fishing in the winter, the cuda encounters would be few and far between for late fall through early spring.
Also, I can easily see how headboat mortality would probably be a bit higher than recreational mortality. Most headboats fish much higher off the water than recreationals and I bet that on average those fish spend more time out of the water (tangles with the guy under the other side of the boat, waiting on the mate to come help un-hook a fish, etc.)

Yes I’m denying it, it was a clear picture of an average trip when only one bottom species is open. Yes, it’s the norm. I’d say 10% mortality is the minimum norm. Sorry if you don’t catch that many fish, but we do. I’m a fisherman, not a data cruncher.

Uh-huh. Right. You surely don’t know me
Can’t wait to meet you though
I invited you to discuss it in person and you threaten me with your size
That just worries the crap out of me, big boy
Let’s put this peeing contest aside and get back to improving the fishery.

I don't think I would have told that one. At the Sept SAFMC meetings about new MPA's, those in favor of closures will probably be passing out copies of this post. This post will hurt the cause. You will be the new poster child for type 1 MPA's Not doubting your word - but perhaps this was a day you should have stayed home. I dont think I would have told that one!!!!
Exactly!!!
</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>
Natureboy, please explain how it will hurt the cause for the people who make the laws to know the truth about the results of their laws. I truly don’t
By the way, I have a hard time believe you have “discard mortality” on grouper. Some of those gags are barely the size of your shoe! Don’t you actually have to throw some back to have discard mortality?
Skineej, I’d really like to bury the hatchet with you. Internet conversations are hard, we can’t relay our facial expressions, tone of voice, body language and all the other tells that go into real communication.
When you get back to Charleston, please give me a call. Larry Teuton, 912-655-5674, or shoot me an email LTeuton at aol dot comm. I’ll come up there and meet you, I’ll buy the dinner and you the drinks, or vice versus, doesn’t matter to me. We’ll sit across the table and look each other in the eyes and have a conversation, and if after that you still want to throw the big boy at me, go ahead and jump like a frog:smiley:
I’m not here for argument, just good discussion and sharing information.

Not everyone here is an expert or a jerk Larry… I for one appreciate your input. Don’t let the drama get to you friend. You’re not the only one to get your feathers ruffled. Don’t give up so easy!

Just show up at the up coming MPA scoping meetings and you will likely see your post in bold print. They will take your numbers and multiply by the number of boats around (even the ones that couldnt catch their ass with both hands) and subtract that from the ACL before the season even opens. Your words will be twisted just like the junk science they use.
Natureboy, I sure hope you are wrong about that
Maybe not. when I was fishing for a living I went to every meeting of every sort and suspect you might be right. Even so, it is what it is, and accurate information is necessary to make good rules. Without the truth how can anyone make good common sense decisions? If telling the truth hurts us, we are in worse trouble than I feared. Well, not really, but we are in as much trouble as I feared.
Strange conversation, 2 people doubt my input, and one person says I shouldn’t supply it to the feds. Maybe they will use the input, maybe not, but it is what it is. Sorry if anyone doesn’t like it.
