Bottom line is we have too many Charter Captains and may recreational fishermen that like to Target Bull Spot Tail for a “simple” catch and Photo op then release. ShAt doesn’t work. Breeder Spot Tail DIE. Way too often.

Too many purposely Target Breeder Spot Tail with No intent on eating what they catch. Piss on targeting a species only to Drag out of the depths and hope it survives the release.

At what depth would it be ok to target "bull reds?" And also at what point in your opinion does a fish meet "Bull" status? Thanks for your time.

23 says you only need 20 baits for a day of fishing.

Lets just stick to your Comment on “targeting” Large Breeder Spot tail. My opinion is I don’t think they should be Targeted at all. If you fish You’ll catch them, If you target them and have semi skill you will most certainly catch them. With Big Breeder Spot Tail I don’t think it’s so much the depth as the fight to get them to the boat and hold for a picture that gives them a hard time surviving while having to be returned. Just my opinion and yes I have caught quit a few over slot reds while trying

Out of the 25 bull reds I catch and release let’s say 5 die, that sucks, now if you catch 25 slot fish, all 25 will die. Who is hurting the fishery more?

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

They don't call them "breeders" for nothing. So, that's probably not a question you want the answer to.

That being said, I have ZERO problem with someone targeting “bull reds”. Some are going to die. It’s just a part of the sport. Anyone who thinks that 100% will survive is just kidding themselves. Have fun, and be gentle to them, and do what you can to release them in good standing and that’s all you can ask for.

The only thing that “get’s me” is people holding fish up with hands inside the gills and then bragging about how they vented the fish and it “swam away healthy”. That’s like me reaching inside of your lungs and grabbing your bronchioles with unwashed hands and claiming that you will be just fine after a few days.

At that point, I’m going to go out on a limb and say the cleanliness of your hands is irrelevant. LOL!!

really??! 5 Breeders at a possible 1.5 trillion eggs and you ask this question? Why do you think DNR set the slot limit were it is?

“Why Bruce?”

The slots will most likely end up on someones dinner plate instead of the breeders washing up on the beach as crab bait , and yea i know the crabs gotta eat too , but the cost of the millions of unlaid eggs is too high a price , imo!!!

If you’re so concerned with the fishery why keep any of them?

with that many eggs being laid you would think the survival of the species wasn't in jeapordy. The other 20 fish would lay 6 trillion eggs with your numbers.

Also, the 25 slots that were taken home and eaten, will never have the chance to become breeders. How many eggs would that have been?

I’m with you Capt. 25 slot reds eaten, a lot worse than 5 bulls dying. And I think 5 bulls dying is a little high. IMO.

No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

The 25 taken in the slot are accounted for in the allowable catch that is supposed to keep the fishery sustainable. The problem is if you catch 25 breeders of which 5 die then the next day or week someone else catches the remaining 20 of which 3 die and on and on until 0. These fish are not exactly distributed everywhere and people know where to go to catch them. It becomes particularly problematic in water over 50 feet deep like the Harbor channel/jetties and the Ravenel bridge where some people target them virtually every day during the time when they are present. How long can you hold your breath after running a 100 yard dash? Take a picture of the fish in the water if you must show of your angling prowess. I always enjoy the pictures of the rigid fish with the washed out coloration and caption “So and so released this nice redfish (etc.)”. Actually released but likely dead.

You guys might want to google “sciaenops ocellatus fecundity”… Slot reds don’t produce anywhere close to “breeders”.

You guys are dicks. Y’all are “not in my back yard”, “I wasn’t born here, but I don’t want anyone to move here after I moved here”, type of people. Y’all are also women. Guys help each other out while women **** talk and gossip. Sorry, just an Army Ranger’s observation of a bunch of dudes acting like a bunch of chicks. This whole website is for spotlight rangers.

Whatever y’all do, don’t help each other out. Just **** talk everybody. Mature.

Hate to burst your bubble… (more people are moving to Charleston)

25 Breeder Spot Tail caught for photo opportunity and then release. This time of year with our current temperatures I I’ll bet it’s closer to 10 dieing actually given a 3 day window from Photo to release, I’ll bet it’s closer to 15 that die.

Unfortunately I can not prove this scientifically and Neither can you. The only proof is those of us that have released as best we could but still have seen the Floaters.

Oh no, the internet got someone else upset!

What bearing on the conversation does “army ranger” have? Just tooting your own horn?

As far as people coming to Charleston…that’s a tough one. And a scary one. Not to derail the thread, but people come to Charleston for its charm and quaintness, easy living lifestyle, and relaxed feeling. Now, it’s busy, traffic is crazy, people are everywhere, Johns island is turning into James Island, on and on and on.

At what point to the people who moved here for the slow life decide the fast life is too much and move? What happens when people quit coming here because we’ve destroyed all of our history and pushed away our easy living ways for the hustle and bustle of city life?

I for one am over it. Said I’d never leave, but it’s becoming time.

It’s already happening. Look out to a 40 mile radius from Charleston and see how the land prices have skyrocketed. Used to be abe to find many areas Around Cottageville dirt cheap… Not now, many seeking a piece of country life and not hearing their neighbors fart or having to park their boat in a storage lot.
