Cape Island

Any tips on fishing around the southern end of Cape Island ? I have fished the northern end but nervous navigating around and mooring boat for a couple of hours while fishing front beach.

I’d love to hear some advice on this as well from anyone who’s done it.

There’s good reason to be concerned about fishing that area.
Several years back, a couple of anglers were fishing a bar off Cape.
They anchored their boat on the bar and both went fishing.
Their anchor pulled; the boat went to sea on the rising tide.
Night was approaching. One of the men swam to shore.
He alerted rescuers. A man knowledgeable about the area manged to find
the other angler in the pitch dark and rescue him-water was up to his neck.
Probably could find old posts about the incident here-I have no idea how to do it.
Your best bet-go with someone who knows the area.
It’s a lovely place; but it can be dangerous.

And last year a boat broke anchor and floated out to sea only to be blown back to the beach. Only experienced boaters familiar with anchoring and reading tides should attempt anchoring on the north end. The south end is much easier but you still have to know what the tides and wind are doing or you could get stranded.

A man’s got to know his limitations.

Thanks gents for the info . Stern , I remember that rescue a couple of years ago , those fellas were definitely lucky to fish another day. I probably will just end up on the northern end just to be safe and may hike idown and check it out .

I agree, you need to know what you are doing in that area. Make sure you go with someone who knows the area before trying it on your own. I have been fishing that area for 15 years and I’m the one who’s anchor came undone last year. It’s a beautiful area, but it’s a long way from help. Thanks hjohnson for yall’s help with that last year, and good work this year!

Was out there on Saturday and anchored up behind the south end of the island and had no issues .We humped it across the island to the beach and fished all day until storm came up and chased us off . I did hear of a boat out there Saturday towards the middle of the island that got swamped , but have no details .

How was the fishing? Have any success?

Had several guys fishing out there and we only landed a pair of 39’s and a 32 . It was a very disappointing but a beautiful day to be with friends and toss back a few barley sodas.

I got there anchor rope. I tried to dig up the anchor, but it was too deep. That was several years ago.
