Carolina Style Flats Build

She looks sweet! Challenging build with all those curves. Did you do the design? The delta pad in the back looks nice - was it hard to draw in as far as transition from the deadrise? Thanks for posting your project.

I don’t think any respectable Carolina boat builder would use stitch & glue.

Cold molded or the traditional strip plank is the way to go.

I have a hard time deviating from tradition.

Amen to that cape_fisherman! We tried the stitch and glue method which has its place in boat building. Yet the only way to get that dramatic flair and tumblehome is to use the plank method for sure.

Gray duck- It was a challenge getting those planks to form just right on a boat this small with curves like it has. Marc at Envi Boats does our design work and CNC cuts our jigs.

That boat has a wide bow but no real flair. If you could see it from the right view you would understand. The only thing that really mimics a carolina boat is the shear break, other than that it is nothing like a true carolina style boat. I had to learn this the hard way.

are you steaming ply to plank the sides or is it thin slats of solid lumber? Have you tried a silicone heating blanket for bending the planks instead of steam? (I think you’re steam bending,am I right?)

You have no excuse not to see me coming…

Wooooooooo!</font id=“size4”>

check this one out - NC builder - this is the next boat on my build list and I wonder if it could have a delta pad. ???

just curious, did you build this from a kit or do you have to cut all yout parts from drawings? I’m building a 19 ft hatteras dory, center console, from drawings and my joints aren’t as good as yours. I’m an aircraft structure guy and am impressed by your work. maybe we can hook up on the creek and compare notes.

the most useful thing I learned in college: if you put one paper bag inside another, you can carry draft beer

We actually use neither. The jig is CNC cut and placed on a level platform at specified spacings. This determines the shape of the boat. Then all the longitudinals and planking start out of 4X8 plywood sheets and 1X6X24 douglas fir boards.

That is sweet!!!

Here is a little update. Spent some extra time over the past few weeks taking a fishing trip to the keys and then moving into a new shop and collecting supplies for our new 21’ inshore carolina style build. This week we were back to work. Finished the glassing on the 17’ and started the fairing process using all alexseal products. Got the base built for the 21’ jig and finished the keel and stringer laminations for the 21’ We should have the new jig up by tomorrow night and ready to start making some real progress on both boats.

Thats so freakin cool…Thanks for the updates…Love it!

The 21’ inshore boat jig is up and the keel and stringers are installed. Ready to start on the chine log, sheer band, and rib bands!!!

Good looking stuff. I only wish my mind worked that way.

I’m late to the show, but this is really fascinating!

That’s sick!

They are going to be some sweet looking boats. I have a dumb question. How do you go about getting a capacity plate for cutom made boats?

Just a couple of bands and you can already begin to see its shape pretty clear!

looks great, what city are you building these in?
i assume charleston but just curious.
thanks for the pictures as you go.
