Cast net regulations for non-baiting (surf, pier)

If you are using a cast net to catch shrimp for bait or maybe a couple pounds for supper, are there any restrictions on net MESH size? I know those who are baiting shrimp during baiting season have to have a mesh of 3/8".

The only reason I ask is because I need to buy a new net and it will serve double-duty for catching minnows and such (both fresh and saltwater) for bait, and I definitely prefer the 1/4" mesh.

I do not bait shrimp, at the moment. I do own a canoe that I could use, but I haven’t tested myself standing in that thing lol.

For shrimp during baiting season the requirement is 1/2" mesh net.

You can use either smaller net for minnows and shrimp for bait - you would need a saltwater license and not have over 12 doz.

OK, gotcha. Forgot the 1/2" mesh, it’s been 6 years lol.

jford, I think the 12 doz rule is only in winter. Now that shrimping is open, should be able to take 48 qts

It’s 3/8s in shrimp season.

I’m a high class redneck.

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in pfgs and buffs.

Lol I’d love to be able to find 48qts from the piers

TB - pretty sure you are right on that. Season is open. 48qt
