Casting Platform or Yeti?

Want a casting platform for the bow. Traditional platform or Yeti w/ Seadek on top? About same price. Will standing on the Yeti work just as well or will I be happier with a traditional casting platform.

Plan to use a stripping basket often times with it too. Boat is 1720 Action Craft

Watcha think?

Yeti, without a doubt, 100%. You spend the same, and get an item that doesn’t only have 1 purpose. The 50qt. is the one you want, with the seadek.

I personally like the platform as my ice box has a cushion. I have stood on a cooler a few times and it wobbles and makes more noise and such. Line also gets caught underneath sometimes. I also strongly reccomend one of these. I will now throw the fly when its much windier, thanks to this little mat made of dildo rubber. The problem with a stripping basket/bucket when perched on a platform is that its far below you and more of a pain to strip into than it is a help. Unless you get the protrim size platform that has room for both you and the tamer.

What is it?

I like mine. It’s made by Carbon Marine. It rolls up for easy storage. If it’s really windy it doesn’t work as well but then I try to strip the line into the cockpit.

I use a Yeti as my casting platform and have caught many fish from it but definitely spent many days cursing it. Their latches love to grab fly line. A friend of mine on the bow one day realized that it’s a little less frustrating if you face the rubber latches forward, but those things are still line magnets. A stripping basket would work if it were five feet tall and you didn’t have to bend down to get the line into it.

I have seen another cooler in shops, Engel,or something like that, that has different style latches that are a little more recessed than the Yetis. Also I notice when I have novices to sight casting, or people that arent on boats much they are hesitant to stand on the Yeti. Not sure if you will be dealing with this much, but a wider casting platform, not cooler, is on my Christmas list.

Good luck hope this helps

i made this up but i think it’s true

What HHIonthefly said. Nothing like watching a novice jump up on a cooler. Platforms are usually better designed to stand on.
Coolers can be dual purpose thou.

get an Engel… their latches are better and won’t snag your line… ive stood on many a cooler in my day but it never hurts to strap it down somehow…

New tag line?

It’s nice to have a permanent/light casting platform. I don’t think you need more storage on that boat of yours. I find it an annoyance (small annoyance) to move a cooler around during a trip.

When I fish my jon boat, I use the Yeti up front as a platform- works like a champ. When I’m on a flats boat, I really LOVE a casting platform. Nothing for the fly line to snag on, and it is a TON easier to see around when driving the boat… just my 2 cents, but I’d go for the casting platform.

Some good info

Was thinking yeti, but now i’m leaning platform. Can’t stand line snags when flyfishing. Want to keep the bow snag free as it is now. Things to look for in platform? recommendations?

try dri dek (west marine -the stuff to line lockers) cheap cheap and works very well. i like my platform but a cooler with ice might bring your bow down a hair and help your draft if your azzheavy.

Yeti snags are an easy fix: Throw a towel over it. If its windy, get it wet.

I use a Yeti up front b/c it helps trim the boat out just like Scotty said.

My first comment on Yeti coolers is never buy a cooler heavier than your wife can carry.

They don’t really keep ice that much longer. If you really want quality, buy an eva cold.

Definitely buy yourself a casting platform. I have a pro-trim line tamer, but I recommend a fiskars leaf bag with tubing stuffed with lead sinkers.

This bag folds up and stowed easily in forward hatch, so you always have it when the wind picks up.

Grapex-I fished with a guide in the keys several years ago that had the home made leaf bag and sinkers you mention It was awesome combined with the casting platform. Caught my first permit that day. That’s what I’m going for just not sure which platform. Birdsall?

You can’t go wrong with Birdsall, top of the line. But, you could check because there are a lot of fabricators out there. Go to micro skiff.com site and ask those guys.

Thet will know.

I want this for Christmas.

feather …
I know they had a casting platform at the pawn shop at Orleans and Ashley River for $200 brand new less than 2 months ago … Hell of a steal if they still have it … Don’t even think they knew what it was

CH Allen - is that your Ankona skiff in the pic?

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.
