Okay guys - I realize this is not in the right forum but I need HELP and with the weather, I’m thinking this forum is going to be SLOW! Please don’t bust my chops! Here is the deal - had an early model contender that (under cover) the neighborhood cats like to drag dead crap in - clean up, repeat, clean up, repeat! Upgraded to a nicer Contender and now the problem continues - I want em’ out! The Boat is covered 100% of the time and the bastards come and go at night! Anybody had any experience with this? Moth Balls, Sonic etc. - and yes - I have been thinking about Antifreeze, 22 rifle, electric shock, anything slow and PAINFUL but then my 10 year old begs me PLEASE don’t hurt em’! Anybody got a solution?
Thanks Phin - but I would have to run it 24/7 for it to be effective. They seem to be entering under the cover between the motors - the boat sits on a concrete driveway. I guess I could try to rig up a motion sensor??? Think if I kill em’ and skin em’ anybody here would mind? I’ll even post a few pics!
DCON rat treys will kill most animals that eat it, or themselves.
Within 3-5 days, then the rest eat the dead and die. Just keep it up until they are gone, may take a while!
That is what i’m trying to avoid! Hopefully somebody on the board has been successful in getting rid of these things! I seriously do not like cats - hmmm I wonder why?
Hey Bill - will cats eat DCON? I’m sorry Mr. Officer but I was trying to keep the rats out of my boat and the cat must have eaten it by mistake! Perhaps you should talk to the owners about allowing their animals to roam around and destroy everybody’s property!
Where do you keep your boat? Is it in your yard or in storage? How about a big dog to guard the boat?
Moth balls make for an excellent cat deterrent. Cats despise the smell of moth balls and will avoid contact with them. If you’re looking to keep the neighborhood cats out of your boat, try putting some in a bowl inside the boat in the area where they are climbing in.
Boat is in my yard! I actually fenced off a section to keep my dog from bothering when I worked on or loaded the boat. Go figure! I was planning on going by Petsmart tomorrow to see if they had that exact unit! What a pain in the !@#@
Put an electric fence designed for small dogs around/across the access points. Not the burried invisible fence kind. The real electric shock-you kind. We had to put a wire on our fence to keep our dog in years ago. Not only did it keep the dog in. It kept every manner of small animal out. You’d just have to be a little creative with how to run the wire to make sure you get in the cat path. You wouldn’t have to leave it up for long. The cat(s) aren’t going to want to play that game more than once.
Go to Tractor Supply, they sell a pair of live traps for like $22. One is a large trap and one is a small trap, they kinda resemble the old “Have-a-Heart” traps. Set the trap on the ground beside the boat and put a little “enticement” in the trap for them.
You will catch them…Guarenteed!
Take the kitty’s to the pound or wherever else you deem appropriate.
I recently had to get rid of several cats around my house for almost the exact reasons as you. Trust me, this works.
On a side note, I’d be careful with poisons / toxins. They are too indiscriminate for a populated area.
Oleander flowers and sap are poisonous to cats. And, as a rule, only cats. A little tuna seasoned with Oleander… Not that I advocate that sort of thing. But as Sharky said, males will spray your bote to mark thier territory as soon as a female comes in heat. I would suggest you fund a cure quickly. I had a similar issue with squirrels and used this:
“There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.”
Ernest Hemingway
The cheap old mouse trap set in abundance around the entry point might work. If nothing else it would be funny as hell to see a couple of cats trying to get around the nieghborhood with mouse traps hanging off various locations on thier person…
Saw on another site that someone was having the same problem, one suggestion was duct tape sticky side up. Put at entry point, don’t know if it will work, cheap and worth a try. Also someone has a motion detection light rigged with a moition detected sprinkler to spray at entry point. that one sounds a little complicated to me.
They make spray called Bitter Apple that you can buy at Petsmart that cats HATE the smell of its got a spicy smell and cats hate that. Its made for spraying on wires, tables, etc places where you don’t want a cat to be. To me and you we cant really smell it but cats can. Spray you a good bit where you think their getting in. Thats my .02!

I’m not sure what county you are in, but I’ve been told Dorchester County animal control will charge you a fee of about $30 to drop off a stray animal. All of these counties are going to a SNR (Spay neuter release) program w
I’ve had good luck getting the squirrels out of my attic by putting a strobe light in there. West Marine sells the battery powered waterproof kind. It does look kinda weird, but Halloween is coming up right?
Also, a friend of mine is Florida has the same problem with feral cats getting under the cover and he puts plastic snakes just under the cover and claims it works.
betcha if you did both nothing would go in there!
