G8rnsc & I headed out at 10 am Sunday to look for reds on the flats. After over 2 hours with only one slot fish released to show for it, we went looking for trout. One one point we found the reds at dead low…well over 100 fish…but they ignored the Gulp! shrimp & jerk baits, dead stickin’ or moving. They ignored muddies on the bottom, freeline and under a cork. They ignored the gold spoon.
When the tide started in, we tried muddies & Gulps, catching one slot red and a couple of trout. Moving to a known trout hole, we tried Gulps and mud minnows again with only a few fish. I tied on an artificial and after my fifth trout on 5 casts, G8rnsc tied one on also. Counting, we stopped at 67 trout and two reds, including Blair’s nice 24" spottail, all released. Way better than half the trout were keepers…although we only measured a few. No big ones, but we had fish to 18".
Not since my childhood have I caught 67 trout on a drop. What a day! The trout bite is the best I have seen since I began fishing inshore in earnest in 2006. If you ain’t out dere, you ain’t a gonna ketchem!
I fished sunday. Lucy Creek and all the way around Morgan Island. Nothing. I still need that right spot/right time. I went to the store today and got some more gulp/doa stuff. Oh well…time on the water I guess.
