Folks,
I know this is probably supposed to go under the techniques category but I thought I’d ask you guys since we’re all doing the same fishing. I’m looking to purchase a cast net to catch my own finger mullet rather than buying the frozen ones. What size would you recommend? Should I throw it in the tidal creeks or in the surf? Are there certain areas around JI that are commonly fished for bait? If anyone can provide some insight for this novice I would greatly appreciate it.
I am certainly no expert but a 6 foot net should be plenty big. You an use it in either the surf or the tidal creeks. You should get bait in either spot.

Agreed. 6 footer for versatility.
If you only fish the beach and don’t toss it into creeks and such, then get one bigger. Hitting a school of mullet with an 8’ net will net you a lot more than trying to pick them off with a 6 footer. There’s a HUGE difference between the two.

Yep, smaller for creeks & larger ones for the surf. If you only want to purchase one, then I’d go for the smaller of the two. I have a 7’ that is just about right for creek fishing. Its a good size to throw over railings on a pier as well.
I don’t fish JI, but I do go down to Shem Creek a good bit. You’ll find mullets flushing out of the marsh as the tide ebbs. At Shem I find that the most productive time. During high tide, the vast majority of bait will be up in the grass.
Great advice, thanks everyone. Tight lines and GL this weekend!
I’m just a novice myself, so this is just my 2 cents here. I’m thinking a 3-5 footer would be more ideal. I got a 7 footer and this time of year where bait is not plentiful, my arm will reach muscle failure after 5 to 6 casts. I did that 3 days in a row and nearly messed up my shoulder. When the bait is running a 3-5 footer will be plenty. I mean who keeps a 7ft net full of bait fish for fishing from land?
As for where to cast, any dock or creek should work but be sure to check it out real good during low tide to see where the oyster beds are. If you want some ideas on a couple spots, send me a PM.
