I’m using a double drop rig with size 2 kahle hooks baited with cut squid and all I can catch is sharks (15 sharks, 1 other fish this week!). Is there a certain bait/rig that would catch fish other than sshark. I’m in IOP
A two or three hook drop rig with small circle hooks and tiny pieces of shrimp work best for me. Just make sure your hook is small enough. Should catch whiting , pomps, spots, occasional crevalle , puffers , small reds, small rays, small sharks etc etc

Ps. Use lighter rod. Hold in hand.

Ditto on the shrimp. And fish closer in…closer…c l o s e r. . . c l o s e r . . . that should be about right. If you are catching sharks you are probably out on the flat. Whiting, Spot, Croaker, Specks, Pomps, Black Drum and even slot Reds are going to be down in the troughs and holes. All my good spots I can cast to under handed. Of course, my opinion.
When you get get shrimp, make sure it’s fresh! Earlier this year I could not find a whiting to save my life until I went and caught some live shrimp and cut those up

Cast right in the back of the breakers where it’s only about knee deep. Keep your line tight and keep fishing until it gets only about a foot deep - recast back out. 2x on fresh - shrimp for bait. Find the troughs, cuts, and little pools in the sand at dead low tide and find a mark to reference to when water is up. Even if it’s a foot deeper than normal it’s structure and where the fish will be. The only line I throw way out is a big nasty chunk 'o mullet with a circle hook on a fishfinder rig for sharks and I put in in a rod holder with drag not too tight. That rods for a thrill and the other for the table.

You can’t catch 'um on the couch!
IOP on Sunday we couldn’t get out of the baby sharks. They were at every depth all the way up to swimming around where we could see them in a few inches of water. We couldn’t even get a big shark on the big rig way out without the little ones tearing it to pieces.
Right now is the typical early summer pattern surf fishin’. The breeding fish are moving in and out doing there thing and sharks are dropping there pups. We fished IOP Sat. From 11:30-5:30. Untill low another 5-6 gallons of small mixed fish. Got real slow at low tide. I move out, out if boredom, and I too caught one small shark after another maybe 20-30 some two at a time. The small Bluefish are thick as well. But I will keep going out.

Agree with Dparker, Iv been catching tons of very small sharks (10-15 inches) from the surf with little bits of shrimp and mullet. I even moved down the beach to several locations to get away from them and still caught them everywhere i went. Cant keep them, no fight, might as well have the birds steal my shrimp. Frustrating…
Quit using the squid as much, the juvenile sharks seem to really hone in on that.
I catch fewer of them if I am using cut shrimp or even cut pinfish, although the pinfish obviously can still cause issues, depending on their mood.
Fish with a #4 or #6 hook for whiting. I hate khale hooks for anything but flounder, and even there I prefer to target them with a gig instead lol.
