Catching Reds In The Surf

Are they all that common to catch in the surf, particularly Folly? I have heard of the giant bulls being caught in the Fall off the Folly pier but dont usually see them caught in people’s surf reports, am looking for slot or overslot 15-30" size. Would cut shrimp be the best bait for catching them in the surf too? Any recommendations on how to target them or just fish like fishing normally.

You can catch them at all the beaches. They are more plentiful and easier to hook into in the Fall when water temps drop. Ive been catching small ones lately at Folly but have seen a few large drums caught at Breach Inlet. Shrimp pieces or slices of fresh whiting are best IMO. Good luck!

do work live life

The only Reds I am catching now are yearlings moving out of the creeks. I usually don’t see slots untill September, bulls in Oct.-Nov. Of course I do not fish the inlets, but I am sure you might find a bigger Red moving in or out. Right now though it’s whiting, blue fish, sharks, rays and the occassional spot or croaker. Maybe EARLY morning or late evening you might snag a black drum or two around groins. Water is gettin’ hot.

I caught my first Red the other week (first time fishing here at all actually haha) it was a baby only about 6-8 inches but it was exciting to see one haha. But hopefully when it cools down it will get a bit better and bigger!

I’m a relative newbie to fishing the Charleston area rivers and creeks, and have never fished the surf. Can anyone give me so me advice re which tides might be best? I’m thinking of going very early tomorrow morning, being in the water before first light. It will be just about 1/2 into the incoming tide. I’ve read that some anglers feel the bottom 1/2 of the falling tide is the best time, but would like to go tomorrow unless you experienced guys think it would be a waste of time. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips.

I like the time around mid rising tide a lot. That is without a doubt when I have been most successful

Went to front beach near the lighthouse Sunday am. Caught a dozen puppy reds on fresh shrimp that I had just netted from my neighbor’s dock. They wouldn’t touch cut finger mullet or cut menhaden. All on a single drop bottom rig at high tide. I had to use one of my homemade sputnik 2 oz weights to hold bottom.
