That is scary, that is more reason to be prepared for the unexpected.

A very sobering video! Does anyone know or have any idea what was the cause?

i read on another site that they left the hatch in the splash well open. Said they were having fuel problems on the way out, and they had to pop the hatch to pump the primer.
Seems like the seas were way to calm for that much water to fill the splash well, and sink a 30’ boat.

No plug as well from what I can find. Bilge pump’s float switch must not have been working either. You have to wonder if the bilge was even working. Sounds like they sunk their own boat from sheer stupidity.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Looks like they were anchored from the stern which would let water come in over the transom.

I saw a big donzi sink like this one time off of Cape Fear River Channel
If the comedy channel on your XM goes out switch your VHF to 68.
Sounds like the diver was the brains of the operation. Not very impressed at the guy behind the wheel. Distress call should have been made LONG before diver was back in boat.
Where did the power go? They were underway when the picked the diver up.
Makes you think long and hard about who you leave at the wheel when you dive.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
Lots of questions came to my mind as well, Scott. And, I completely agree with you that the diver seemed to be the brains on board that day. Imagine his state of mind trying to unload gear and deal with the situation at the same time as you well know that’s never a quick or easy process (well, at least, not for me!) I think it’s him at the end of the video still wearing his BC?
Whatever the cause(s)of the problem(s), that’s one scary place those four guys were in that day! I’m glad they were rescued and brought to safety. I just hope that awful experience doesn’t cause them to give up.

Kind of quite. Starting to notice a few things though. The dishes I left in the sink were STILL there this morning! And dirty too! When I got home my bed was STILL un-made. All the mail, clothes, cups, etc I tend to leave laying around are not magically finding there home like I am use to either. I had to cook my own meal too!
But worse of all that little guy that runs out to meet me everyday when I get home from work was not here today. Had to call him on the phone and hear about Granddaddy’s boat. Not as good but it made up for it a tiny bit.
May have to venture out tonight and find something to do.

If you have power, put the damm thing in gear and go! If you are moving, the boat will self bail. It looked like he wanted it to sink.

If I was already having fuel problems AND started taking on water, the LAST thing I would do would be to turn off the motor.Very few people I would leave my boat with to dive.

The diver is always the brains on the boat!!!

I have to agree with Sells and Skinee. Whole thing is bizarre and doesn’t add up. Also why are they leaving the boat, holding onto a cooler? Love to know the real story on why this happened.
Is it just me or is there a deck plate fully removed at 11:38 in the video during “Salvage Recon”? Seems like that is the one that you want to have closed when water is coming from the back… I’m just saying… They seemed pretty peaceful for such a tragic event. Looks like it was time to get a new boat.
I watched the video without audio the first time. Body language and facial expressions look to me like they’ve done this before or it was going as planned.
I don’t know what happened or what I would have done. I wasn’t there. None of us can say since we weren’t there. The thing to learn here is to always be prepared for anything. Know your boat, and don’t assume anything. I know this from experience. Learned it the hard way. I have been on a boat that’s sunk. We got it to a mud bar in shallow enough water to save it when the tide went out further. Also been on a boat that lost all electronics due to a bad voltage regulator. Been on a boat that lost electrical power due to motor not charging. Been on boats that got exhaust leaks and pumped water into the bilge if you ran the engine. Been on boats where both bilge pumps stopped working. All sorts of stuff happens. It isn’t a matter of IF. It is only a matter of when.
Have a plan for everything you can think of that can go wrong- make back up plans for back up plans. This stuff is serious. It isn’t the USCG or fellow boaters’ fault when you die offshore. Know when and how to ask for help so you give yourself a chance. Have people on the hill knowing where you’re supposed to be and when. Yeah- you will catch he11 on here for breaking down or catching a ride on a cruise ship when you get back to chas. fishing dot com, but you didn’t die out there. Congrats.
The dudes in the video were very lucky IMO- whether they planned stuff to happen or not. Often it is more than luck that saves a man.
Only reason dudes wouldn’t have tried to run the water out of the boat that I can think of is that he was afraid he’d lose the divers if he took off while they were still down. This is a catch 22 if conditions are rough or hard current and divers don’t have an anchored buoy to hang onto. What do you do when you come up and there’s no boat? If no buoy anchored, how do you stay put? If the boat’s gone for whatever reason, you have to do what you can to stay put and hope t
There is so much wrong here that I don’t know where to begin. The link by Circle Hook helps…there is never a post in that link as to why the water came in (boat had been salvaged by then), or why they didn’t run the boat to drain. The guy bailing is acting way to non-chalant for an “emergency”. Skinee, the deck plate looks open to me, as well. As to why anyone would ang onto a cooler instead the larger, more visible, still floating, hull, I can only guess that perhaps they thought (planned?) it would sink. Lord knows, I don’t wish misfortune on anyone and this may well be an absolute accident, it just looks suspicious. Can’t imagine the father (diver) is part of the plan if there was one, not with his son involved.

“The real reason that it went down is we opened one of the scuttle hand holes to pump the gas bulb. The lid was left off all day and over time the water was to much for the pump. (This is what we think”
