Charlesston Classic this past weekend

I know, I know…This is a college basketball thread. I personally can not stand the sport, haven’t watched a b-ball game since maybe I was 6 and Meadowlark Lemon and the Globetrotters came to town in the 70’s sometime. Hell, I dont even know if that is the dudes name, it was something “Lemon”…

Anyway, Saturday I am glancing at the sports page and see the bracket for the Charleston classic tournament going on at the college of Charleston this past weekend. Six colleges from all over the place playing Thursday - Sunday. Seems to me this would be a big deal for tourism and the local b-ball fans. I never heard an advertisement, commercial, nothing, not that I would have wasted my time going to this…but I had a couple of questions for those in the know:

  1. Why wasn’t the College of Charleston playing in this? Seems to me that having them go up against bigger schools a couple times would put people in the seats. Is there rules that they cant play and only host this thing?
  2. The Championship game was at 9pm last night. Really? On a Sunday night? Looking at the pictures in the paper, there is like 13 people in the stands…

Like I said I am curious as to why this wasn’t a bigger deal than the Carrier Classic that they tried to have a couple years ago. Maybe it was and I missed all of the hype? Maybe they did not want to make any cash from this? Dont know.

Ok, back to the CU/USC prediction thread…

ESPN puts on the whole show. I went to it 3 years ago to watch the Gamecocks play Miami. The arena was about 90% full for that game. I looked at a few of the games, this year, on tv and didn’t notice much of a crowd at any of the games.

Key West 1720 115 HP Johnson Saltwater.

This just isn’t much of a b-ball area. I don’t know why they schedule a tournament in an area w/o the fan base.

But I do have to mention my Tarheels stealing their tourney championship away from Pitino and the Cardinals (currently #3 in the nation and the defending national champ team). Now THAT game had the seats filled.

There is a rule in college basketball that says a team can play once every five years in a holiday tournament. There is one exception and that is when a school is putting its on tournament. I hope that helps.
