Charleston county tax bills on new boat highert ha

Check your chas county tax bills-- the appraised value on the one I got was more than the dealer bill of sale (this was in the second year). I dont know what chas county uses for boat value- maybe they use retail values.

not sure either… as property taxes on my 17’, 10 year old sea pro and motor totaled over $100 this year… it’s gone up significantly in the last few years with no explanation.

When I complained about the tax bill on my skiff, I was told that the county (Berkeley in my case) used an outside source to determine value. They had mine totally screwed up. But it was fixed with a phone call. A simple phone call saved me $300.

I also had the same problem. They use a total different value than Kelly or NADA. I called them and they use a publication (cant remember off had) if you want it pm me and Ill try to find it. Any way I was able to call the publication and had to pay them for the value that they gave the tax office. I then had to call the tax office and got the rate they used and with them on the phone I did the math and came up with a number $80.00 lower than they did using there numbers. Then I explained that if my boat was worth the amount they were saying it was worth that I needed to sell it and make money since I bought it. The guy on the phone was not willing to see they were wrong and could not explain the problem, but did say Ill send you the paper work and challenge the tax. That is in the process.

I could forsee a large scale tax challenge doing some good. I do not own a taxed water craft at this point but I will come the first of the year (a few weeks). Won’t be much for me, but I’d still consider filing a challenge if I think they’ve padded it. I’m in Dorch county so I’m not sure if it’s an issue up here.

I missed out on challenging it the first tax year.

When you go to register your new motor you will need a bill of sale. If state sales tax was not paid then you will have to pay DNR before you can register.

In Dorchester County, once the properties value is less than $500 you won’t be billed for property taxes.

My house was assessed at $125/ sq.ft. and houses are selling at around $70/ sq.ft. in my area for the past few years. I filled out the paper work to challege and after a month recieved a notice that my challedge was denied and I had 30 days to dispute it. No reason but if I disagreed I had 30 days to dispute their denial of my original dispute. WTH?

I paid my boat and motor tax a few weeks ago. My boat is still pretty new so it was painful…ouch! Then I started thinking what about the guys with the twin and triple outboards. Do they have to pay property tax on each engine???

I have the same issue here in Va. But guess this. There are a few counties/cities with little or no boat tax. My main county is is $3 per hundred. I keep her part of the year in a $0.50 per hundred county. This for me is almost an even swap for boatel storage for the winter. Plus its where I trailer it to anyway. WIN WIN for me. Plus they get lodging and food spent from me.WIN WIN for them. They also have an $80k cap or $2500 max tax or somethong like that. This attracts the bigger boats. My county is not boat friendly because we have no water.

yes…we do and yes ouch!!!

“Yeah i fish offshore and yes i turn my VHF down sometimes,i know that makes me a bad person…”

They had my skiff at double what I paid for it. Called the tax office for over a month. Sounds like only two guys deal with boats and they never returned a phone call. Had to go down and file an adjustment claim. The taxes on my 04 skiff were over $500. I usually am less than $140.

Why is it always up. Why can’t they go down…

Because we consistently vote in competent thieves and incompetent numbskulls.

$500 for an 04 Skiff is insanity. I would be standing at Nikki Haley’s office over that one!

Ouch that is terrible!!!

Worst thing is its still not fixed and now the bill is due…

I was told you can not counter the motor value. It’s a 2004 mercury 60. They have it at $2,450. Tax is about 50 bucks. Do you think that is high?

Guess I will just pay the motor and obviously fight the boat value.

I have a 1999 Pacemaker Custom 19’center console that is titled in Greenville County. I got my tax bill about a month ago and for the boat and motor (97 90 hp Mercury (currently with blown lower unit)) it was nearly $240. I filed an adjustment on it last week and got it approved this week down to $70 for just the boat and they dropped the motor tax completely. Much better for a boat that is almost 15 years old and a motor that does not currently work. Its always worth a try to get the adjustment. A lot of the time they won’t budge but sometimes you get lucky.

Regester your boat in Del. or Maine there is on tax there

After reading about tax bills, I checked mine this week. I have 2 boats/motors to pay for, and live on James island, in the city of charleston.

One set of taxes went down, the other set went up…I pulled last years taxes and noticed that I was paying north charleston millage rates for the last 2 years??? I called the tax office, and they could not explain how or why I was paying taxes to north charleston. After crashing their computer, they got it fixed.

Something else to check…

That sounds about right for an 04 60hp.

Better than paying taxes in Cola. My tax on a 2001 90 HP is valued at $2400 and I pay over $100 a year.

When I was in Horry County the same motor but newer at the time was $55 a year.
