Went out with Capt. Chuck with aqua adventures. Amazing guy, sick boat and fat fish. Biggest Red I’ve ever caught. I fish these waters a lot and I couldn’t recommend him more. Great guy.

It was South. Plenty of people around. Landed a nice bonnethead. My buddy got a red not too much smaller. Then a couple ones that run about average. I fish this area a lot. Nothing this big. He did it a little bit different than I have. Guess that is why I’m singing his praises instead of standing on the bow of a KW 1720. (What he does different? I can’t say but I’m pretty sure we cast netted a leprechaun
Nice! What bait?
wow…what a brut. Nice catch!

BTW…Fish was released healthy and waiting to be caught again.
The story is… If you do not craddle a red that big, it will swim off… but will not live long.
just FYI… I too have a picture holding a big bull like that, and was later told of the harm it causes.
beautiful fish though. congrats

Thank you for the info. I did not know that. I will do so from now on.
i don’t believe that SAK. the key is getting them in quickly in these hot temps, and a reviving release.

There’s truth to what you both said. Allowing them to hang unsupported out of the water is pretty tough on their internal organs, but it won’t necessarily kill them. Quick fight and long revival are important as well. Probably the best thing is to target adults in October/November when they are finished spawning, still plentiful, and water temps are much cooler. Good looking fish, though.
nice fish but there is truth to what willfishalot said.
Those boga’s are not good on the heavy fish. They have 30 lbs hanging on their bottom jaw and can cause irreparable damage sometimes to their mouths. Nice fish though.
Always try and hold them long ways with a hand under their stomach and one on their tail.
I won’t argue that the fish is harmed or unharmed. I only want to pass along some info that was told to me by a very trusted source.
It does make sense that the internal organs can be damaged (stomach linings) by holding him in that manner.
Once again nice fish sir.

There was a good article several years ago in either Sportfishing or Saltwater sportsmant. They did a study I believe, and held fish in tanks that had been caught. They found that the big fish that were held vertically by a device such as Boga, had very high mortality compared to those that were not… I believe the consensus was that it ripped the connecting tissue from the head to the rest of the body to the extent they simply couldn’t survive. Some may survive fine, but what is the need to put the fish on a boga? Take a very quick picture cradling the fish, revive properly and watch it swim away…
Thats a very nice fish. I remember reading that study. I believe it stated the damage was due to the effects of gravity on the connective tissues and small bones of the large fish. The fish will survive a few days after and then end up dead. A fish does not feel the effects of gravity when its surrounded by water its entire life. When you remove any large fish and hold it vertically the effects of gravity on a fish cause alot of internal damage.
