I remember “Third and long, Charlie Strong”…
He has been a Head Coach for 4 years…
His first 2 years at Louisville he was 14-12…
I do not think he will get it done at Texas, hope he does, just don’t think he will…
Texas has dropped the ball on this hire.
quote:I disagree. 1st 2 years were not his players. He got his recruits and put Louisville on the national map. He is an excellent coach.

Texas has more money than God.
You are telling me that Charlie Strong is the best candidate for that opening?
Texas is going to eat him alive if he does not produce a NC type season and soon.
They have big money and they will not wait long for results.
If they don’t win 11 next year they will be upset.
Again, I wish Charlie the best, but he is in over his head at Texas.
They paid a premium price for a mediocre coach.
Charlie is not worth the price they paid.
Edit:
Of all the coaches in the entire world, you are telling me Charlie is the one?
Really?
Really?

I am rooting for Charlie, but I am with IMUSC here and think he is doomed from the start. Except, I think he is capable of winning at Texas, I just don’t think he will get the support from the “good ole boy” admin and boosters from the start that another coach would get. This is still the state of Texas and whether right or wrong, there is still a reality there that will make it very difficult for Charlie.
Also, IMUSC, he is obviously not the best fit for Texas, but the best fits have turned Texas down, so you have pick someone to give the chance to before it’s too late for recruiting.
I feel for him. He is about to feel what pressure really feels like at that place!!
Successful or not, if you could get the truth out of Texas, he isn’t who they really wanted, and probably wasn’t 3rd on the list. I like Strong and hope he is successful but from everything I have read about Texas, it is an uphill climb.

Funny, for years everyone was all for Charlie Strong to get a shot at a HC position somewhere, then he gets it and is successful at Louisville. Yet because he’s dropped a few games this year, he sucks now, isn’t a good coach, needs to be someone’s assistant again. Texas comes along and all of a sudden he doesn’t fit, isn’t going to work and has to be like the 10th choice and will be driven out because of the good ole boy network, who from inference could be understood to be KKK Grand Wizards if one was to believe certain of you.
Some of these posts are just retarded, no offense meant to the mentally handicapped out there, wasn’t meant as a slight to them.
Charlie Strong is a smart fellow, one helluva coach and recruiter. A black head coach that can recruit in Texas is going to do well, look at Kevin Sumlin. Strong’s biggest challenge is going to be dealing with the politics of Texas’ program. Strong has a much better resume’ than Mack Brown did when he came and you can bet that he’s smart enough to bend MB’s ear on advice. I swear some of you seem to think this was an Affirmative Action hire by Texas, it wasn’t, it was a smart hire.
Charlie Strong will win a NC at Texas and start beating OU like a drum in a few years.
Yeah, they’ll expect him to win but not 11 games right away, not even 10. He’ll get a few years grace and I’m sure do quite well.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

You better go back and read the posts before mine, there is a definite the Good Ole Rich White Boys from Texas won’t tolerate a black fellow messing up long undertone. Good Ole Boy is/has/ and always will be a racist connotation to a southern school. Yeah, he wasn’t the first choice, Saban was. Strong was on the list and at the top from the start though.
Racist, pffft, hardly. Best quit looking for boogiemen, I support Strong and the hire completely. I think he’ll make a good one for Texas or anyone for that matter. The man has class.
Uphill battle? More like a linear move at this point or step back if you look at it. Brown really hadn’t accomplished much since the Vince Young NC season.
But I forget, many of you would know who will do what at a school based on a vast, intimate knowledge of the various prospects. A few of you would probably find fault with a John Gruden level hire were they to make it.

Charlie has certainly paid his dues and has had success at Louisville and before that at UF.
I think that job would be a challenge for anyone, even a John Gruden level hire.
Hope Charlie brings them back.
Can’t wait to see the presser, should be very good.

Dude, read my post. For starters, nothing racist in mine (as you refer to the post before yours). Do you know what “uphill battle” means? By uphill battle, I mean exactly what you refer to. The program has slipped and if you read about the program and outside “influences”, Strong has his work cut out for him. No statement that he isn’t up to teh task as only time will tell. One of the things Saban stated was that there were too many voices involved in TX football. If you know Saban, he doesn’t like being micro-managed. Hopefully Strong will be allowed to run things as he sees fit. If so, he will probably be successful. If not, probably not and may not stick around. Like IM4USC said, this job is going to be a challenge. Not so much for the football side of it, but more from the politics side.

Just because my post followed your’s doesn’t specifically mean it was addressed to you DF. Had I been expressly addressing you, I would have quoted you.
It was addressed to any naysayer about CS and his abilities. Strong is a (**() fine coach and has used his success and national stage at Louisville as a stepping stone to a big time job. Strong has learned from some of the best in the business on the coaching front and I’m sure picked up a thing or two on the politics side of the business along the way.
I seriously doubt he will be micro-managed a

As a Sooner fan, what makes you think Texas will start “beating OU every year like a drum”. They have
I have NO issue with Strong as a hire. He has done great things. I think he deserves a chance to coach big boy football.
I also think the TX job would be extremely tough for anyone. Lots of money, lots of booster influence, lots of expectation.
