Chicago field goal challenge

Pretty cool.

Yeah, I seen it on the news, not many Jan Steneruds or Tom Dempseys around anymore.Seems like more missed kicks these days.It was pretty cool.

Kicking a field goal is not near as easy as people think it is. My youngest is a high school kicker and knows all too well. The snap has to be good, the holder has to get the ball down and positioned correctly and the line has to block. One expects to have all that happen like it is supposed to on the pro level and even college. It doesn’t always in high school. My son has learned to have thick skin with regards to kids who asked how he missed a kick and he usually invites them to come try an extra point. Those that try usually miss and then shut up. That challenge was pretty funny.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

NFL Kickers have one job. They should be able to do it when called upon. Yes, the snap has to be right, the hold has to be right, the line has to block but in this case, the only thing that wasn’t done right was the kick. The snap was good. The hold was good. The line blocked. There wasn’t any wind (which is a rarity for Soldier Field). The kicker simply missed. He failed to do his job. Fact is, his season average (76.7%) is lower than his career average (83.9%). Chicago was 27th (out of 32 teams) in FG percentage and 24th in extra point percentage. Bottom line, Parkey didn’t have a good year, period. With those numbers, he probably won’t be a Chicago Bear next season and may not be in the NFL at all.

The challenge was funny but it didn’t prove anything because none of those people “taking the challenge” were professional NFL kickers. Could I do it? Absolutely not, but I’m not a NFL kicker.

It’s not talking crap if you can back it up…and nothing can back it up better than facts.
