You are welcome and hope it is correct as I found it on the internet:stuck_out_tongue:.

That would be Stono and Olebassard!

Dang Bo, thanks for sharing that video. That is too cool.
Love seeing people running out in bateaus.
One of those boats actually looks like an old Lightning hull.

Great fishing though…man the sheepshead bite has been pretty good for me the past two weeks, just like the video.

That would be interesting to meet one of the survivors

jenki224; watch the Off Topic, thread and when you see something with a subject like, Bessingers Wednesday Lunch, just go there for lunch. When you see a real old guy there, that’s him. Just walk up, introduce yourself and he’ll probably buy your lunch for you, while he tells you the story:smiley::imp:

You can read an account of it here in the 1893 NY Times

jeni224; The old guy I was telling you about, washed ashore up the Stono River and has been there ever since:smiley:

Thanks for posting that vidio! Brings back memorys, my dad purchased a Duracraft 14’ with a 18 hp Scott Atwater in 57 and we also fished the wreck for many years, dont know why we dont any more!

Many thanks for the fantastic video and link to news articles on this great wreck. In my younger days ( now 56) it was my favorite spot to fish with my dad since I always got seasick (to think of it.50 years later- still get sick without meds). This was the one spot I could get up on the b oilers ( just like video ) and not get sick. This was also the best fishing spot- right in the middle of all the fish. If weather permitted us to get to spot- we always caught fish. ( not as many in video- great catch)
It is great spot still holds fish, but still would like to climb up on those boilers.

I have a friend who has fished this since around 1970 and he says the fish are not on it like they used to be (he compares it to the way the Gordon has become)and thinks that after enough silt and sand build up and after enough of the structure deteriorates the fish numbers become less and less . I was in the area last week and was wondering where it was . I actually thought it was by now like the boiler between the further-most range marker and the Gordon , not marked and be sort of a hazard to get near it if you was unsure of exactly where it is . Thanks

As to a hazard and the boiler… friend of mine a few weeks ago destroyed one of his lower units and did some hull damage on it. As he was looking for it, he found it in a bad way in a choppy sea. I’ve fished there but never caught a thing. Nothing there.

It is kind of eerie looking for the boiler and having it come into sight closer than expected.

< Evil is simply the absence of God >

Yea we often see gelco/fiberglass on the boiler from where boats have hit it . I once saw a guy in a 16’ skiff trying to get anchored on it get too close and run the front of his boat up on it and the boat tilted to the side and water started coming in , a wave came and pushed the boat off and away from it , the anchor caught and the guy bailed water for a bit and started back fishing. He had nerves of steel cause it seemed to not upset him at all . I think of that all the time . My son was with me and he got a good lesson on how things can go South in a few seconds . EXTREME CAUTION around that thing !!!

Couldn’t help but reply to the remarks concerning fish on the boiler. There are fish on the boiler. Last week I fished it with a friend and we took some real nice sheepshead off of it. Pics are on my web page. And in the last two years I have caught summer trout, winter trout, redfish, flounder, a cobia, blues, ladyfish and jacks off it. And of course it is loaded with the nearly extinct Black sea bass. And in November it can load up with nice Black drum. I usually only fish it on calmer days, so can use my trolling motor to keep the boat a safe distance from the boiler, yet close enough to catch fish. There is a washout hole on the ocean side of the boiler that can sure provide you with some nice flounder in the summer months. You’ll see the depth drop as you go over it. I really like to use a 1/2 ounce bucktail, trim the tail to the end of the hook and tip with a minnow, shrimp, (live or dead), or a piece of a gulp. Color doesn’t matter, pearl or chartruese. I fish it straight down, feeling for structure to try and minimize snags. The cleaner the water the better.

No you are wrong there are no fish on or near the boiler … except mother-in-law fish. Terrible place to go.

oh and if your using a 1/2 oz buck tail straight down you must be fishing at dead slack tide.

that is an awesome video that beaufort boy posted. Hunting Island sure looks different, thats a huge bath house they have there at the light house. and being able to launch the boat on the beach, thats legit.
