For everyone that is piling on the guy. He has the exact same number of tackles and sacks as he had after two games last year with teams game planning for him this year. ESPN knows the story tearing people down moves the needle and they are piling onto the guy they built up. The stats from last year were not against an all American tackle and not against a top 10 team. It is a long season let it play out. I think they need to move him around and keep the other team off balance. I have not understood the defensive planning up to this point.
Good point Andy. The fact is, there is not one person here (including all the Gamecock haters) that would not take him on their team in a skinny minute. He has been hyped up so much that it will be next to impossible for him to placate everyone. Whether he makes 3 - 4 sacks a game and 4 - 5 TFL, he has an impact on the game because teams plan and make adjustments around him. THAT makes him a game changer and an impact player.

I would like to see then line him up and then move him right before the snap. Teams like UGA line up, look at the defense and then look at the coach on the sideline for the play.
When they look to the sideline, move him over 1 or 2 spots. it will throw everything off.

I guess he’s a slow starter…

Maybe so Reel Karma. He could still end the season with a 4 1/2 sack game.
one game does not a season make…he obviously has talent, but when he is double teamed or they run away from him every play it’s hard to put the stats up…but he is still making a difference…I guess this day and age everybody wants every play to be “The Hit”…

I think there is a lot of merit to teams scheming against him, why not? It’s the offense’s job to score points and running the game toward a dominant player is just foolish. And, as soon as they start moving him around and getting him out of position, a good OC is going to notice the tendencies and burn them on it.
I also think there is some merit to him being a little out of shape. However, I also think that Clowney has been bitten somewhat by the hype bug and might be playing a little safe. Can you blame him, he’s got 11 games left in his college career then an 8 figure check waiting on him plus salary. Been plenty of players who lost a ton of money by being injured during their final season, why would he be any different?

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Character.
But you could be right, not many people in this world, let alone in college football, have the character that most of us spectators would like to see them have.
Not many.
I think he is being utilized in efficiently. Lining up as a defensive end in a 4-3 you are only going to be able to make so many impactful plays. I’m not saying they should move to a 3-4, even though I think he will be better in the NFL in a 3-4, I don’t understand why they don’t move him around more. He could be effective up the middle and make plays wherever he is. My point is that if the teams are game planning around him, get creative and throw off their game plan. If you know your left tackle is going to be blocking him 90% of the time then you can have a TE out there chipping on him or run plays to the other side. If you line him up on either end, or in the middle, or overload one side, or even have him stand up like a LB then it is going to throw the offense off. His speed and strength will get him to the QB but move him around to give him a greater advantage. Just don’t do this against TN, let him and Tiny Richardson have their game in a game again and see who wins.

I would say not many of the spectators have the same character that they are demanding of the individuals they watch. Happens a lot with anyone in the public eye. It not called “under the microscope” for nothing.
Salty I can see what you are saying about not moving him around, but I am of the opinion that I would rather make the offense make adjustments very much like Clemson did with some of their different looks on defense when they played UGA. USC made it too easy to line up and do what they wanted to. At least you give them something to think about if Clowney is not where you expect him to be every play.
Serious question. Why has this not been a problem for other great defensive ends?

It is.
Teams would have done this last year but Taylor was a stud on the other end of the line that would make the ball carrier pay. SC doesn’t have the defensive guys it did last year. Bottom line.
Ricky I dont remember other DE’s being moved around.
In college, I’ve haven’t seen it in the pros. But I rarely watch professional football these days.
I was talking about teams running away from a player, not moving one player around.
“Bruised ribs”??? WTF, next week it will be “my dog ate the homework”,as his reason for not playing. If he is sitting out on purpose to improve his draft position, that may be a mistake.when he does participate,he looks like he is sleepy from eating too much food.
Maybe Clowney needs surgery for curing the bone spurs, why didn’t they do that surgery this past summer? Why didnt the coaching staff react, knowing hes had the problem since high school?Coaching staff seems to treat him like Steven Garcia, just let him do as he pleases.I do find it very odd that the coaches didnt know he was not planning on playing, that will get you fined in the NFL for pulling that stunt.Did bone spurs keep him from running in the summer?Something kept him from conditioning properly. No way he will make it in the NFL in the shape he is in,and if NFL teams know he needs surgery to cure the problem,he may be waiting for a while before he plays for the big $.
Perhaps he will snap out of the funk, right now there are other defensive ends out there having better luck with their seasons, and the NFL scouts.
He does have that smile and those dreadlocks all in shape.
Spurrier told it like it is, or, it’s his way of motivating him.
